A cooling system for a rechargeable energy storage system (RESS) of a vehicle includes a coolant circuit configured to direct a coolant flow through the RESS to remove thermal energy from the RESS, and a refrigerant circuit through which a flow of refrigerant is circulated. A chiller is fluidly connected to the coolant circuit and the refrigerant circuit and is configured to transfer thermal energy between the coolant circuit and the refrigerant circuit. An auxiliary circuit is fluidly connected to the coolant circuit. The auxiliary circuit is configured to selectably direct at least a portion of the coolant flow across a first side of a cold plate for thermal energy exchange with a phase change material located at a second side of the cold plate. One or more valves are configured to selectably direct the at least a portion of the coolant flow through the auxiliary circuit.

A wicking assembly for battery cells of a battery cooling system includes a first face plate including vertical plate portions and horizontal plate portions defining openings. A second face plate includes vertical plate portions and horizontal plate portions defining openings. The support structure supports the battery cells. The support structure includes dividing members separating the battery cells. The planar structure is disposed above or below the battery cells. A gap exists between a planar surface of the planar structure and a planar surface of one of the top wall and the bottom wall of the outer housing for flowing the coolant between the planar structure and the one of the top wall and the bottom wall. The planar structure and at least some of the walls direct the coolant to flow across and between the battery cells.

A cooling system includes a housing configured to enclose an electric vehicle component immersed in cooling fluid and to define a first volume. A variable volume member defines a second volume that varies in response to a first signal. A combined volume is defined by the first volume and the second volume. Heat causes the cooling fluid to transition between a liquid state and a vapor state in the combined volume. A pressure sensor is configured to sense a pressure in the combined volume. A condenser is configured to cause the cooling fluid to transition from the vapor state back to the liquid state. A controller includes a volume adjustment module configured to generate the first signal to vary the second volume of the variable volume member to adjust the combined volume in response to the pressure and a first temperature of the electric vehicle component.

An immersion cooling system for a battery system includes a battery enclosure and C metal-encased, pouch-type battery cells including C metal cases, C pouch-type battery cells arranged in the C metal cases, respectively, where C is an integer greater than one, and C vents on the C metal cases, respectively. A vent gas manifold is in fluid communication with the C vents of the C metal cases and is configured to remove vent gas passing through the C vents of the C metal cases from the battery enclosure.

Immersion cooling system including metal-encased, pouch-type battery cells for hot gas flow separation in battery systems of electric vehicles

Presented are thermal management systems using coolant flow distribution plates for immersion cooling of battery cells, methods for making/using such systems, and vehicles equipped with such systems for cooling the vehicles' battery packs. A battery assembly includes multiple battery cells arranged in adjacent, mutually parallel cell rows. The battery cells are stored inside a protective battery housing that includes inlet and outlet fluid ports for receiving and evacuating therethrough dielectric coolant fluid. A pair of (first and second) separator plates is located between each neighboring pair of cell rows. Each plate includes coolant channels that are arranged in mutually parallel channel bands. The separator plates are in face-to-face contact with each other such that each channel band of the first separator plate is aligned with a respective channel band of the second plate so the coolant channels cooperatively distribute coolant fluid onto and vertically upward between the battery cells.

Disclosed herein too is a method comprising disposing in a battery module a flame retardant layer; where the battery module comprises a plurality of battery cells encased in an outer shell. The outer shell has disposed on an inner surface a flame retardant layer that comprises expandable graphite. The expandable graphite is operative to expand during an thermal event that results in an increase in battery module temperature.

A rotor for an electric machine includes a heat pipe cooling system. A rotor core has a number of cavities internal to the rotor core. The cavities are surrounded by a wall defined by the rotor core. A magnetic element disposed in the at least one cavity leaving a void in the at least one cavity between the magnetic element and the wall. A heat pipe evaporator is disposed in the void and conforms to the available space, contacting the magnetic element and the wall to remove heat from the rotor core.

A thermoelectric device is positioned in direct contact with the phase change material and a heat sink is positioned on a surface of the thermoelectric device. A heat pipe is provided for cooling an electronic component of a printed circuit board. The heat pipe includes a tube having an inner diameter surface defining a bore, with the tube having first and second ends along the bore. The heat pipe further includes a sorbent material coated onto the inner diameter surface of the tube, a first liquid contained within the bore, and a second liquid adsorbed by the sorbent material. The second liquid has a second boiling temperature that is higher than a first boiling temperature of the first liquid. The first liquid vaporizes into a first vapor, in response to the tube receiving heat from the electronic component and the first liquid reaching the first boiling temperature. The second liquid is desorbed from the sorbent material and vaporizes into a second vapor in response to the second liquid reaching the second boiling temperature.
