Provided are polymers (e.g., polymeric materials), nanoparticles comprising one or more of the polymers, and compositions. A polymer may be in the form of a nanoparticle. A polymer can be linear or branched. A polymer includes one or more poly(ester urea) segment, optionally, one or more poly(urethane) segment, optionally, one or more diol segment, optionally, one or more poly(ethylene glycol) segment, and, optionally, one or more terminal/end group. A polymer (e.g., a polymeric material) may include a branching moiety. For example, a composition includes one or more polymer. In an example, polymers and nanoparticles can be used to deliver a drug (e.g., gambogic acid) to an individual (e.g, who has been diagnosed with or is suspected of having cancer and/or a viral infection).

Hydrogels and hybrid hydrogels, methods of making the hydrogels/hybrid hydrogels, and methods of using the hydrogels/hybrid hydrogels. The hydrogels have polysaccharide moieties (e.g., chitosan or hyaluronic acid moieties). The hybrid hydrogels have polysaccharide moieties (e.g., chitosan or hyaluronic acid moieties) and poly(ester amide) moieties. The poly(ester amide) moieties can have one or more arginine moieties. The hydrogels/hybrid hydrogels can be used, for example, in consumer products and as cargo carrier materials (e.g., as therapeutic agent carriers).

Polysaccharide-based hydrogels and hybrid hydrogels and precursors thereof, methods of making same, and uses thereof

Amino acid-based poly(ester amide) (PEA) macromers (e.g., functional PEA macromers) and methods for preparing amino acid-based poly(ester amide) (PEA) macromers. The functional PEA macromers can comprise functional groups such as hydroxyl, amine, sulfonic acids, carboxyl, thiol and acryloyl at the two terminuses of the PEA macromers. The content of the terminal functional groups on the macromers can be precisely controlled by adjusting the molar ratio of reactive monomers. The resulting versatility of these new functional PEA macromers can be used to fabricate a wide range of PEAs and PEA hybrid derivatives with very different chemical, physical, mechanical, thermal and biological properties. The functional PEA macromers can also be polycondensed into forming block PEA polymers.

Fibrous membrane for biomedical application based on poly(ester-amide)s

Cationic poly(ester amide) (PEA)-based hydrogels are provided. The hydrogels are fabricated from unsaturated L-arginine base poly(ester-amide) (UArg-PEA) precursors, pluronicDA precursors, or a combination of UArg-PEA and pluronicDA precursors at predetermined precursor composition ratios. PluronicDA/UArg-PEA hybrid hydrogels and pure pluronicDA based hydrogels are thermoresponsive and biodegradable, while pure UArg-PEA base hydrogels are biodegradable but not thermoresponsive. UArg-PEA based, pluronicDA based and hybrid hydrogels can be synthesized from unsaturated arginine-based PEA salts and/or unsaturated pluronic acid polymers. Unsaturated pluronic acid polymers can be synthesized by reacting pluronic acid with acryloylchloride to provided functional vinyl groups at the two chain ends of pluronic acid. The hydrogels can be used to carry and/or release molecules or compounds such as bioactive compounds, and can function as biologic carriers for a variety of biomedical applications.

Injectable hydrogel microspheres are prepared by forming an emulsion where hydrogel precursors are in a disperse aqueous phase and polymerizing the hydrogel precursors. In a preferred case, the hydrogel precursors are poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate and N-isopropylacrylamide and the continuous phase of the emulsion is an aqueous solution of dextran and a dextran solubility reducer. The microspheres will load protein, e.g., cytokines, from aqueous solution.

Injectable microspheres are obtained from double bond functionalized polyhydric alcohol ester by a method comprising dissolving the double bond functionalized esters in a hydrophobic organic solvent, forming an aqueous solution of stabilizer, forming an oil in water emulsion where the solution of stabilizer constitutes the continuous phase and the solution of ester constitutes the disperse phase and evaporating the organic solvent or from block copolymer of PGCLM and methoxy poly(ethylene glycol).

Biodegradable poly(ester-amides) are synthesized from amino acids, diols and dicarboxylic acids where one or both of the diols and dicarboxylic acids contain unsaturation; e.g., from di-p-nitrophenyl dicarboxylates and p-toluenesulfonic acid salts of bis(alpha-amino acid) disesters of diols where one or both of the dicarboxylate and diol moieties contain unsaturation or from di-p-nitrophenyl dicarboxylates, and p-toluene-sulfonic acid salts of bis(alpha-amino acid) diesters of diols and p-toluenesulfonic acid salt of lysine ester where one or both of the dicarboxylate and diol moieties contain unsaturation. The polymers are useful as biodegradable carriers for drugs of other bioactive agents.
