A hard surfaced screw conveyor comprising a helical metal blade mounted for rotation about a longitudinal axis of the helix and radially extending to an end surface, the blade defining at least one female formation therein having a substantially dovetail shape and a longitudinal axis substantially perpendicular to the blade, and at least one wear-resistant member secured to the blade and having a portion radially extending beyond the end surface. The wear-resistant member defines a male formation that has a substantially dovetail shape and which is disposed within the female formation. The male and female formations may also be triangular, square, circular, or rectangular in shape.

Displacement washing of slurry body is provided in a centrifuge filter (peeler centrifuge) by introducing wash liquid along the inner surface of the drum while the drum is rotating. The wash liquid moves through the filter into the slurry body in a broad front to displace the mother liquor of the slurry body toward the axis of rotation of the drum. The mother liquor is removed by an overflow pipe or dip tube to a point outside the centrifuge filter for disposal.

In a centrifuge for the separation of solids from liquid in which concentrated solids are discharged from radial nozzles at the periphery, there is provided an concentrated solids underflow discharge control apparatus which senses an increased concentration of solids in the underflow and adjusts the flow of the recycle stream as a result thereof to prevent solids from spilling over into the effluent overflow. A sensing chamber and a control module having a flow interference device is utilized to measure a set level backup. Any alteration of said level is detected by a level sensor which sends a signal to a level indicator control and in turn controls the opening and closing of a recycle line valve which controls underflow.
