A device and a method for updating the function of a monitor according to the invention. By using the USB signal lines directly for data transmission and recording the data of a monitor controller to the erasable programmable read only memory, data update can be achieved. Moreover, the erasable programmable read only memory can be updated by separating the recording path and the normal visual path using a recording path separator of the monitor controller. Compared to the prior art, the device and the method of the invention are more convenient and time saving for function update of the monitor.

A single semiconductor chip is configured to better perform the functions which are conventionally provided by 3 semiconductor chips in a monitor for adapting video signals to the specification of the monitor for adequate displaying. A universal serial bus (USB) transmission system for transmitting a monitor control signal and a data signal from a monitor system to a main frame is provided. Digital filter bank device that operates in a frequency-time hierarchically arranged, recursively fed back scheme based on the concept of decimation of a multi-speed-rate-operated system. The digital filter bank device operates in accordance with the computational requirement of summation of products for generating a filter output signal, and the computations are performed according to a software scheme based on a distributed arithmetic algorithm. The use of minimum hardware is enabled by a time-multiplexed scheme for both the implementation of the decimation and the distributed arithmetic principles of signal processing. The use of such a digital filter bank device results in a digital filter hardware architecture that has a significantly reduced semiconductor device die surface area.

An apparatus and a method for indicating the computational adder overflow status of bit-variable data employing a pipelining adder. An adder is provided with a first input port and a second input port, for adding a multiple-bit data input from the second input port. A plurality of shift registers receive and store in parallel a plurality of multiple-bit data output from the adder, and sequentially output the plurality of multiple-bit data to the second input port of the adder in response to a clock signal. A comparing circuit simultaneously receives and compares a multiple-bit data output from the adder and a multiple-bit data output from a plurality of shift registers. An overflow arbitrating unit arbitrates the overflow status of each multiple-bit data in accordance with a comparing result from the comparing circuit as well as a selective signal.

A digital sound generator with tremolo and vibrato sound effects is provided, which comprises: a source memory for storing different types of wave-tables; a first adder for adding a constant frequency and a step-varied frequency waveform to produce a tremulous frequency waveform; a register for storing a frequency address parameter from a central processing unit; an address generator for generating a frequency address in response to the frequency address parameter to said source memory to determine the type of signal waveform being outputted, so that said source memory produces a tremolo by playing the tremulous frequency waveform in the determined signal waveform; an amplitude generator for generating the amplitude of a normal sound; a second adder for adding the amplitude from the amplitude generator and an amplitude-variant signal from the source memory to produce a vibrato; and a synthesizer for synthesizing the tremolo and the vibrato to produce a sound with a special sound effect.

A method and corresponding apparatus retrieves data from at least one joystick connected to a video game machine by generating a data locking signal to lock multiple bits of data in at least one joystick in response to a data read signal supplied by the video game machine; generating a data retrieving signal including a plurality of consecutive pulses to retrieve multiple bits of data in the joystick in response to the data read signal; transferring consecutively the multiple bits of data from the joystick to a data register in response to the data retrieving signal wherein the plurality of consecutive pulses is employed to retrieve the multiple bits of data; and reading the multiple bits of data directly from the data register in response to the data read signal by the video game machine. The apparatus using the above method comprises a timing generator for generating a data locking signal to lock multiple bits of data in the joystick or joysticks and a data retrieving signal including a plurality of pulses to consecutively retrieve the multiple bits of data from the joystick in response to a data read signal supplied by video game machine; and a data register for consecutively receiving and storing the multiple bits of data, and outputting the multiple bits of data in parallel according to the data read signal.

Apparatus and method for retrieving data from a joystick

An expandable controller for a video game machine. The expandable controller is connectable in series to a control deck of a video game machine. The expandable controller includes a keypad. A plurality of key-switches of the keypad generates key-pressed status signals corresponding to key-pressed status of the plurality of key-switches. An input port of a key-pressed status control circuit connected to the keypad receives the key-pressed status signals. The key-pressed status control circuit also receives a locking signal supplied by the control deck. A shift register is provided with a data input port, a clock input port, a reset input port and a data output port. The reset input port of the shift register is connected to the output port of the key-pressed status control circuit for receiving the key-pressed status signals from the keypad. A data read signal supplied by the control deck is inputted to the clock input port of the shift register to retrieve data from the shift register through the data output port.
