A connector in an information handling system includes a battery connector, a battery receptacle, and a signal pin structure contact. The battery connector includes a first set of power pins and a first set of signal pins. The battery receptacle includes a second set of power pins and a second set of signal pins. The first and second sets of power pins are coupled together when the battery connector is inserted within the battery receptacle. The signal pin structure contact transitions between an open position and a closed position. The signal pin structure contact couples the first and second sets of signal pins when the signal pin structure contact is in the closed position. A power down signal is provided to components of the information handling system when the signal pin structure contact is in the open position.

Battery connector in an information handling system

An information handling system is configured to implement a battery management method and perform battery management operations including receiving information indicative of an operating system associated with the information handling system and determining a battery behavior environment (BBE) based, at least in part, on the operating system. A battery management unit (BMU) profile associated with the battery behavior environment may be selected, wherein the BMU profile indicates settings for one or more battery management parameters. The BMU is then configured in accordance with the BMU profile and the battery is managed in accordance with the BMU profile.

Information handling system with operating system dependent battery management

An information handling system may include a processor; a battery to supply power to the information handling system, the battery comprising a voltage regulator to power a battery management unit (BMU) on the battery and set a system present pin of the BMU to a high voltage; the BMU to: detect a voltage indicator indicating a change in voltage state at a system present pin of the BMU that is externally connectable to a ground or voltage source at the information handling system, the voltage indicator indicative of an electrical coupling of the battery to the information handling system while the information handling system is in an off state; and register the voltage indicator within a battery register of the BMU; and a microcontroller, upon powering on of the information handling system, to read the voltage indicator at the battery register and determine that the battery has been coupled to the information handling system.

Systems and methods for detecting battery removal while an information handling system is in an off state

In one or more embodiments, an information handling system may include an embedded controller, communicatively coupled to a battery system that is configured to power the information handling system. The embedded controller may be configured to: receive a cycle count from the battery system; determine that the cycle count is above a threshold; query the battery system for an expected margin of error, in response to determining that the cycle count is above the threshold; receive the expected margin of error from the battery system; determine that the expected margin of error is within a range; and in response to determining that the expected margin of error is within the range, compute a condition metric of the battery system based on a prediction of a capacity of the battery system and a design capacity of the battery system and store the condition metric of the battery system.

System and method of determining battery system condition

A computer-implemented method extends the time until the battery reaches an over-discharged state of an information handling system during storage. The method comprises determining if a first battery parameter is outside an associated first battery parameter specification. When the first battery parameter is outside the associated first battery parameter specification, a power management controller isolates the battery by turning off a charge/discharge field effect transistor. The method also includes determining if the first battery parameter is outside an associated second battery parameter specification. In response to the first battery parameter being outside the associated second battery parameter specification, the power management controller is triggered to enter a minimum power state to further reduce power consumption from the battery.

Desktop power use behavior may be detected while a portable information handling system or any other type of battery powered information handling system is operating on external power such as an AC adapter. The desktop power use behavior may be detected by monitoring one or more power usage parameters to detect usage characteristics that indicate a battery powered information handling system is being operated in a manner that is similar to operation of a desktop information handling system. Upon detection of desktop behavior, one or more processing devices of the information handling system may respond by taking one or more desktop use response actions.

Systems and methods for monitoring and characterizing information handling system use behavior

Desktop power use behavior may be detected while a portable information handling system or any other type of battery powered information handling, system is operating on external power such as an AC adapter. The desktop power use behavior may be detected by monitoring one or more power usage parameters to detect usage characteristics that indicate a battery powered information handling system is being operated in a manner that is similar to operation of a desktop information handling system. Upon detection of desktop behavior, one or more processing devices of the information handling system may respond by taking one or more desktop use response actions.

A power supply system includes a battery and a power management system. The power management system is coupled to the battery and to an external power source that is operable to charge the battery using a first charge level. The power management system is operable to determine that a battery power level of the battery is greater than a first predetermined level that depends on a battery storage option and, in response, disable power from being supplied from the external power source such that power is supplied from the battery until the battery power level is below the first predetermined level. The power management system is also operable to determine that the battery power level of the battery is less than the first predetermined level and, in response, charge the battery with a second charge level that is less than the first charge level until the battery power level is above a second predetermined level that depends on the battery storage option.

Systems and methods for waking up a battery system (e.g., battery pack such as a smart battery pack) installed in an information handling system from a shipping mode in response to the occurrence of one of at least two detected events. The first of these of these at least two events is detection of the battery system being removed and reinstalled into operational electrical contact with the information handling system, and the second of these at least two events is the activation of a user input device provided for the battery system.
