A method and apparatus for infrastructure performance monitoring are described. In one embodiment, the method comprises monitoring virtual application performance, identifying degradation in the application performance, and correlating the degradation to one or more of virtual and physical infrastructure components.

An access point in a wireless network is traced by sending an internet protocol (IP) packet from a detector to the access point through the wireless network. The detector and the access point are connected through a private wired network. The IP packet is sent with the source IP address field and the destination IP address of the IP packet set to the wireless IP address and wired IP address, respectively, of the detector. The IP packet is routed back to the detector through a switch in the private wired network. When the IP packet is received at the detector, a source IP address, which corresponds to the port on the switch used to send the IP packet, is determined from the received IP packet.

Tracing an access point in a wireless network

The service set identification (SSID) of an access point (AP) in a wireless local area network (WLAN), where the AP suppresses its SSID in beacon frames broadcasted by the AP, is determined. At a detector located in the WLAN, a probe request broadcasted by a station through the WLAN is received. At the detector, a probe response sent by the AP to the station through the WLAN in response to the probe request broadcasted by the station is received. At the detector, the SSID of the AP is obtained from the received probe response.

Determining the service set identification of an access point in a wireless local area network

In one embodiment, the method includes importing network and node configuration of an existing physical wireless local area network (WLAN) deployment from WLAN surveying system that captures and analyzes WLAN traffic in order to define a configuration of the existing physical WLAN, simulating a virtual WLAN using the imported network and node configuration as parameters of the simulated WLAN and applying various other configurations not present in the imported network and node configuration as parameters of the simulated WLAN, and analyzing the simulated WLAN to produce throughput statistics of network and nodes of the simulated WLAN.

In a wireless local area network a probe request frame is transmitted over the wireless local area network by a station. The probe request frame is received at a detector in the wireless local area network. The received probe request frame is analyzed to determine if the station that transmitted the probe request frame is an unauthorized station.

Detecting an unauthorized station in a wireless local area network

A wireless local area network (WLAN) is monitored by receiving transmissions exchanged between one or more stations and an access point (AP) in the WLAN using a detector located in the WLAN. A database is compiled based on the received transmissions. The received transmissions are analyzed to determine the state of a station. The compiled database and the determined state of the station are used to diagnose connectivity problems of the station.

A method and system for measuring the throughput of transmissions over a wireless local area network having a station and an access point. The station can send messages to the access point during a test period, where the messages can be sent as data frames. The access point can receive messages sent from the station during the test period. For messages received by the access point, the access point can send acknowledgements to the station, where the acknowledgements can be sent as control frames. The station can receive acknowledgements from the access point for messages received by the access point. The station can determine a throughput from the station to the access point for the test period based on the acknowledgements received at the station from the access point during the test period.
