A water-soluble and biodegradable antimicrobial agent is provided, comprising a polymer composed of a segment A and a segment B, in which, the segment A has the following formula I: the segment B has the following formula II: wherein the segment A and the segment B in the polymer have a molar ratio of 1:0.007-1.2, and n is 0 or 1, m is an integer of 0-2, m+n&#x2260;0, X is H, Na, K, NH, &#xbd;Ca, or &#xbd;Mg, and Y is Cl, Br, or I.

Water-soluble and biodegradable antimicrobial agent

A method for preparing a polyglutamic acid (&#x3b3;-PGA) fiber having antibacterial and water absorption properties is provided. The method includes providing a &#x3b3;-PGA fiber and immersing it in a sodium hypochlorite solution. A relation exists between an immersing time T of the &#x3b3;-PGA fiber and a concentration X of the sodium hypochlorite solution as shown in the formula below:10.2&#x2266;(64.5550)&#x2266;15.2,wherein X is 0.006-0.4 wt %.

Method for preparing high water-absorption and anti-bacterial gamma polyglutamic acid fibers

A method of preparing a water-soluble and biodegradable antimicrobial agent is provided. The method includes treating a polypeptide compound with sodium hypochlorite for at least 1 min, such that the polypeptide compound has at least one N-halamine group and has good antimicrobial effect. By using the method of the present invention, a chemical synthesis process is not required and an organic solvent is not required either, and thus, an antimicrobial agent having high water solubility, biodegradability, non-toxicity, good sterilization effect, and regeneration can be prepared with reduced harms to the environment.
