A rechargeable battery includes: a case accommodating an electrode assembly; a cap plate closing and sealing an opening of the case; an electrode terminal including a rivet terminal being coupled to the electrode assembly and extending through a terminal opening in the cap plate, and a plate terminal being at an outer surface of the cap plate and coupled to the rivet terminal; and an insulating member electrically insulating the electrode terminal from the cap plate, the insulating member including a first insulator and a second insulator. The first insulator being between the cap plate and the plate terminal at an outer periphery of the rivet terminal, and the second insulator being coupled to the first insulator at an outer periphery of the first insulator and between the cap plate and the plate terminal.

A rechargeable battery includes an electrode assembly including first and second electrodes, a case in which the electrode assembly is accommodated, a cap plate combined to an opening of the case, the cap plate including a first terminal hole and a second terminal hole, a first electrode terminal passing through the first terminal hole of the cap plate and a second electrode terminal passing through the second terminal hole of the cap plate, and a lead tab connecting the electrode assembly to the second electrode terminal. A rechargeable battery includes: an electrode assembly having a first electrode and a second electrode; an electrode terminal electrically coupled to the electrode assembly; a case that receives the electrode assembly; a cap plate at an opening of the case that closes and seals the case, the cap plate having a vent hole to discharge an internal pressure of the case and having a vent plate that closes and seals the vent hole; and a short circuit member having one end electrically coupled to the electrode assembly and another end that extends along a direction toward the vent hole at the inside of the case. At least a portion of the short circuit member is modified to be drawn outside of the vent hole when the internal pressure is discharged.

An exemplary embodiment provides a rechargeable battery including a case including an internal space and an opening and a cap plate coupled to the case to cover the opening. The cap plate may include a first portion having a first thickness, and a second portion continuously disposed along an edge of the cap plate and having a second thickness that is thicker than the first thickness.

A rechargeable battery includes an electrode assembly including first and second electrodes; a case in which the electrode assembly is accommodated; a cap plate combined to the case; an electrode terminal provided in the cap plate and including first and second electrode terminals; and a lead tab including first and second current collecting tabs for electrically connecting the electrode assembly to the electrode terminal, wherein the second current collecting tab includes an electrode connecting portion that is connected to the electrode assembly, and a terminal connecting portion that is bent from the electrode connecting portion and electrically coupled to the cap plate.

A rechargeable battery includes a cap plate which closes and seals an opening of a case. The cap plate includes a welded portion, an adhesive portion, and a separated portion. The welded portion is welded to the opening of the case. The adhesive portion is recessed in the welded portion by a thickness of the case, and is thicker than the welded portion to protrude inward. A lateral surface contacts an inner surface of the opening. The separated portion is connected to the adhesive portion, is further recessed in a thickness direction of the case, and is separated from the inner surface of the opening.

A rechargeable battery, including an electrode assembly for performing charging and discharging operations; a case in which the electrode assembly is placed; a cap plate for closing and sealing an opening of the case; an electrode terminal provided outside of the cap plate through a terminal hole of the cap plate, the electrode terminal electrically coupled to the electrode assembly; and an insulating member for electrically insulating the electrode terminal from the cap plate, the electrode terminal including a rivet terminal in the terminal hole and a plate terminal connected to the rivet terminal outside of the cap plate, and the insulating member including a first insulator at an external circumference of the rivet terminal outside of the terminal hole and a second insulator between the cap plate and the plate terminal at an external circumference of the first insulator.

A rechargeable battery includes an electrode assembly having electrodes located on either side of a separator; a case housing the electrode assembly; a cap plate sealing the case; a lead tab that is connected to each of the electrodes; and a terminal that is connected to a respective lead tab and protrudes from the case through a terminal hole, wherein the terminal comprises a different material than the lead tab, and wherein an insulating portion is located between the terminal and the cap plate.

A rechargeable battery having a decreased size by including a membrane of an external short-circuit part in a cap plate is provided. The rechargeable battery includes a case having an electrode assembly accommodated therein, a cap plate closing an opening of the case, first and second electrode terminals extending through the cap plate and electrically coupled to the electrode assembly, and an external short-circuit part coupled to an outer portion of the case for electrically disconnecting or short-circuiting the first and second electrode terminals from or to each other. The external short-circuit part includes a membrane coupled to an inner surface of the cap plate and electrically coupled to the second electrode terminal, and a connection plate electrically coupled to the first electrode terminal and spaced from the membrane. The membrane extends around an outer circumference of a short-circuit hole in the cap plate to cover the short-circuit hole.

A rechargeable battery includes an electrode assembly; a case housing the electrode assembly; a cap plate sealing an opening of the case; an electrode terminal that is electrically connected to the electrode assembly and extends through a terminal hole of the cap plate and is oriented outside of the cap plate; and an insulating member that electrically insulates the cap plate and the electrode terminal while supporting the electrode terminal at an outer surface of the cap plate.

A rechargeable battery that simplifies a structure that implements an external short circuit and that reduces a production cost is provided. The rechargeable battery includes: an electrode assembly that is formed by spiral-winding a first electrode and a second electrode that are disposed at respective surfaces of a separator interposed therebetween; a case that houses the electrode assembly; a cap plate that closes and seals an opening of the case; a first electrode terminal that is connected to the first electrode and that is installed in an insulation state in the cap plate; a second electrode terminal that is connected to the second electrode and that is electrically connected to the cap plate; and a vent plate that is installed in a vent hole of the cap plate and that is short-circuited with the first electrode terminal when the vent hole is opened.
