An image displaying apparatus with local dimming control with 2-line addressing is disclosed. The apparatus includes a display panel, a light-emitting diode (LED) backlight divided into a plurality of zones, and a control unit. The control unit is configured to couple a dimming data to the LED backlight. The zones of the LED backlight are driven by row enable signals and column driving signals based on the dimming data. Each individual column driving signal transmits a common brightness data, a first residual brightness data, and a second residual brightness data. A first row enable signal has a first enable pulse in a frame period, and a second row enable signal has a second enable pulse in the frame period. The first and second enable pulses are at least partially overlapped for reducing a pulse current of the LED backlight for enhancing a lifetime of the LED backlight.

Local dimming control with 2-line addressing

The present invention provides a motion content based dynamic frame rate conversion method for displaying a video by a display device, comprising: detecting motion content of the video and generating a control signal for controlling a display color depth based on the motion detection result. The video is displayed with a lower color depth at a higher frame rate than a standard configuration of the display device if the motion detection result indicates that the video contains appreciable amount of motion content; and the video is displayed with a higher color depth at a lower frame rate than the standard configuration of the display device if the motion detection result indicates that the video is relatively static. The present invention can facilitate the display device to dynamically convert its display output formats according to motion content of the video to further optimize the display quality.

Dynamic frame rate conversion in active matrix display

The present invention provides a dithering and directional modulation-based frame rate conversion apparatus comprising: a directional delta modulation generator configured to receive a plurality of input color data representing a plurality of input color components of an input pixel color and generate a plurality of modulated data for the plurality of input color data respectively; and a plurality of dithering modules configured to perform K-bit dithering conversion on the plurality of input color data respectively to generate a plurality of output color data for representing a plurality of output color components of an output pixel color with a color depth of K bits per component, where K is an integer equal to or great than 1. The present invention can allow display to support frame rates higher than its standard configuration without observable color depth degradation.

Frame rate-convertible active matrix display

A passive matrix LED display driving scheme based on subframe pulse width modulation (PWM) to increase frame scan rate and further with channel-to-channel compensation is provided. The scheme may comprise: dividing each frame of the display video into T number of subframes; converting a driving signal for a pixel into a N-bit driving data, compensating the driving data with a compensation value; mapping the compensated driving data into the T number of subframes respectively.

Method for driving a passive matrix LED display

A method is provided for driving an active matrix display device comprising a matrix of pixels configured to display an n-bit image data in an image frame by dividing the image frame for each pixel into n subframes; defining the n-bit image data to have n1 number of greater significant bits and n2 number of lesser significant bits, where n1+n2=n; and selecting the rows of pixels non-sequentially in the subframes corresponding to the n2 number of lesser significant bits such that there is no more than one row of pixel being selected in each subframe. The provided method can utilize the scan sequence in a more flexible way to make better use of the available scan time such that a higher display resolution or dynamic range can be achieved without increasing the scanning frequency.

Driving method for active matrix display

In a display panel, drivers for driving LEDs of pixels are distributed over a substrate, and transceivers relay pixel data from a timing controller to the drivers. The drivers are divided into groups. Respective drivers in a group receive corresponding pixel data addressed thereto solely from one corresponding transceiver. The corresponding transceiver and the respective drivers are daisy-chained to form one first linear daisy chain, where each pair of immediately-adjacent first drivers are connected. Plural first linear daisy chains are formed for all groups. The transceivers are daisy-chained to form a second linear daisy chain by connecting each pair of immediately-adjacent transceivers. The first and second linear daisy chains form a fishbone topology network to enable transmission of pixel data from the timing controller to the drivers while reducing a data-line footprint on the substrate that mounts the pixels, driver and transceivers in comparison to a conventional star-topology network.

A light-emitting diode (LED) includes a first electroluminescent (EL) component, a second EL component, a first segment electrode, a second segment electrode, and a first common electrode. The first segment electrode is electrically connected to the first EL component. The second segment electrode is electrically connected to the second EL component. The first common electrode has a first branch and a second branch which extend along a first direction and are arranged in a second direction different than the first direction. The first branch is located between the second branch and either of the first and second EL components, and the first and second branches are electrically connected to the first and second EL components, respectively.

A method is provided that allows the use of monochrome PMOLED display driver to generate grayscale patterns without the need to change the resolution of the 1-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC) on the data line (SEG). The method further allows the elimination of extra frame buffer display memory needed by conventional techniques. This is achieved by swapping display memory space for display image pixel color (grayscale) depth in the expense of display resolution. The method further allows grayscale pattern data to be written into frame buffer only once without additional control from the host controller. The method further allows the dynamic application of grayscale on selectable whole or portion of a scan line such that full grayscale image display or a mixture of monochrome and grayscale image display in a single display panel is possible.

Method and apparatus of grayscale image generation in monochrome display

A system enabling compressed frame scanning for a display and a method thereof are described herein. A pixel having a maximum pixel data in a row of the plurality of rows corresponding to a frame is identified. The maximum pixel data identified in the row is assigned as a pixel data for the row. A scan time for the row is computed based upon the pixel data of the row and a scanning time associated with a unit of the brightness index. An aggregate scan time for the frame is determined based upon the scan time computed for each of the plurality of rows corresponding to the frame. Finally, the frame is scanned based upon the aggregate scan time determined for the frame thereby enabling compressed scanning of the frame. The method is further implemented for randomly assigned rows of the frame to two or more sub-frames of the frame.
