Poroelastic materials, methods of making such materials, biosensors comprising such materials, and methods of making and using such biosensors. According to one aspect, a poroelastic material is formed by a process that includes depositing a prepolymer composition on a substrate, annealing the prepolymer composition in a pressurized steam environment at a temperature and for a duration sufficient to form a porous medium having a solid matrix formed of a polymer derived from the prepolymer composition, infiltrating the porous medium with a liquid that includes electrically conductive nanomaterials such that the electrically conductive nanomaterials are located within pores of the porous medium, and evaporating the liquid such that the electrically conductive nanomaterials remain in and/or connected through the pores of the porous medium.

Interfacial delamination processes for physically separating a film structure from a substrate, and processes of fabricating a thin-film electronic device. The processes entail providing the substrate with an electrically-conductive separation layer on a surface of the substrate and optionally providing a pin hole free barrier layer on the electrically-conductive separation layer, forming a film structure on the electrically-conductive separation layer or, if present, the barrier layer, to yield a multilayer structure, and separating the film structure from the substrate by subjecting the multilayer structure to interfacial debonding that comprises contacting at least an interface between the film structure and the electrically-conductive separation layer or, if present, the barrier layer, with water or an electrolyte solution.

Delamination processes and fabrication of thin film devices thereby

Provided herein are manipulators for handling fragile layers and related methods of handling using the manipulators. The manipulators comprise a contact surface with thermally responsive recess features and a microelectric heater in thermal contact with the contact surface. In this manner, the manipulator is an electrothermal manipulator, with changes in temperature providing a contact force to pick-up a transferable layer material and a release force to facilitate release of the transferable from the manipulator.

A device includes a contact lens, a corneal sensor that includes a circular trace of conduction paths located at or near an outer peripheral edge of the contact lens that surrounds an unobstructed area at a center region of the contact lens, and a connection wire coupled to the corneal sensor and configured to electrically couple to an external data acquisition system. Methods of fabricating the device may include providing a thin device that includes a sensor and a connection wire coupled to the sensor, transferring the sensor to a curvilinear inner surface of a contact lens, feeding the connection wire through the inner surface of the contact lens and out of an outer surface of the contact lens, and performing electrochemical polymerization of a conducting polymer material over the sensor to anchor the sensor to the inner surface of the contact lens.

Technique for therapeutic contact lens systems

Skin-mountable electronic devices and methods suitable for fabricating and using the devices. One embodiment of such a device includes a flexible structure comprising a pattern of individual interconnected traces each comprising a portion of an electrically-conductive layer that overlies and directly contacts an underlying portion of an elastomeric layer. At least some of the portions of the electrically-conductive layer within the pattern are functional electrodes of the skin-mountable electronic device.

Skin-mountable electronic devices and methods of using and fabricating the same

Electronic textiles and methods of fabrication electronic textiles. Nanoparticles of a conductive material are sprayed along a conductive path into a fabric material so as to penetrate into the fabric. A layer of a second conductor material is coated over the nanoparticles along the conductive path. A layer of an insulator material is coated over the layer of the second conductor material so as to encapsulate the conductive path and form a trace. An electrode configured to contact a subject wearing the fabric material includes a layer of a third conductor material coated over the layer of the second conductor and electrically coupled with the conductive path. An electrical connector is secured to the fabric material and electrically coupled with the conductive path. The nanoparticles are sprayed onto the fabric material using a dual regime spray process implemented with a dual regime spray system.

Electronic textiles and methods for fabrication thereof

Nanoassembly methods for producing quasi-3D plasmonic films with periodic nanoarrays of nano-sized surface features. A sacrificial layer is deposited on a surface of a donor substrate having periodic nanoarrays of nanopattern features formed thereon. A plasmon film is deposited onto the sacrificial layer and a dielectric spacer is deposited on the plasmon film. The donor substrate having the sacrificial layer, plasmon film, and dielectric spacer thereon is immersed in a bath of etchant to selectively remove the sacrificial layer such that the plasmon film and the dielectric spacer thereon adhere to the surface of the donor substrate. The dielectric spacer and the plasmon film are mechanically separated from the donor substrate to define a quasi-three dimensional (3D) plasmonic film having periodic nanoarrays of nano-sized surface features defined by the nanopattern features of the donor substrate surface. The quasi-3D plasmonic film is then applied to a receiver substrate.

Nanoassembly methods for producing quasi-three-dimensional nanoarrays

Drug delivery devices that have a flexible film, an array of nanoscopic, porous needles attached to a surface of the flexible film, and a therapeutic drug cargo loaded onto the needles. The drug delivery device may be applied to living tissue such that the surface of the flexible film contacts the living tissue and some or all of the needles are inserted into the tissue. The flexible film may then be dissolved while leaving the needles inserted in the tissue. The needles degrade in the living tissue over time causing release of the therapeutic drug cargo loaded onto the needles.
