A heat and moisture exchanger (HME) adaptor for a closed suction catheter assembly having one end in communication with a closed suction catheter assembly and another end configured to rotationally engage and releasably hold the HME is disclosed herein. The adaptor may include a retainer having an aperture that engages projections on the HME to releasably secure the adaptor to the HME. The adaptor may include a retaining ring that may be deformed or rotated to engage or disengage projections on the HME. The adaptor may be used with extended use closed suction catheter assemblies.

The present invention relates to an improved flap valve or other internal component for use with respiratory suction catheter and manifold assemblies. This flap valve or other internal component provides the assembly with an improved mechanism for cleaning the tip of the catheter without drawing an excessive amount of air from the respiration circuit to which the endotracheal catheter is attached. More specifically, the present invention relates principally to a closed suction endotracheal catheter system which provides improved cleaning of the catheter while minimizing air drawn from the patient's ventilation circuit by providing at least one protrusion on at least one surface of the flap valve or other internal component. By using a flap valve or other internal component with at least one protrusion, the flap valve or other internal component is strengthened and designed to prevent the flap from scraping mucus or other secretions from the catheter onto the distal surface of the flap during retraction.

A connector for a respiratory assembly is provided. The connector includes a body that has a first end and a second end. The body has a passage disposed therethrough from the first end to the second end to allow for transport of fluids and objects through the body. The passage changes direction approximately 120&#xb0; between the first end and the second end. The first end includes a coupling that is configured to rotatably engage a first member of the respiratory assembly. The second end includes a coupling that is configured to rotatably engage a second member of the respiratory assembly.

An improved respiratory suction apparatus catheter includes a manifold for attachment to the distal hub of an endotracheal tube to form a respiration circuit, a catheter tube which is displaceable through the manifold and into the endotracheal tube to suction secretions from the tube and lungs, and a valve mechanism disposed adjacent the respiration circuit to minimize the draw of air from the respiration circuit of a patient while the catheter tube is being cleaned. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the catheter tube is cleaned more thoroughly than in the prior art while simultaneously drawing little or no air from the patient's respiration circuit.

An adaptor is used to connect a closed suction catheter assembly to an artificial airway, such as a tracheostomy tube. The adaptor includes a housing, the internal chamber of which includes structure to allow a patient to breathe through the adaptor when attached to artificial airway. The adaptor may further contain a release assembly for separating the housing of the adaptor from the tracheostomy tube.

A method and apparatus are provided for cleaning a medical device tube, for example a catheter tube. The distal end portion of the tube has a distal opening and at least one side opening adjacent to the distal opening. The distal end of the tube is disposed in a closed chamber with the distal opening generally opposite from a first orifice defined in the chamber. A liquid is introduced into the chamber and is drawn into the distal opening in the tube, for example by a suction force. A different fluid medium, such as air, is drawn through the first orifice and into the distal opening in the tube. A turbulent flow path is established with the fluid medium wherein the medium is drawn through the first orifice, into the distal opening in the tube, out the side opening in the tube, and back into the distal opening in the tube. This turbulent flow path enhances the cleaning action of the liquid introduced into the chamber for cleaning the distal end portion of the tube within the chamber.

An endotracheal suction catheter apparatus is provided. The apparatus includes a distal end that is configured for allowing a catheter to be moved through the distal end and into the respiratory tract of a patient. The distal end defines a cleaning chamber where the catheter may be cleaned. A flap is located in the distal end and is located on one end of the cleaning chamber. The flap effects fluid flow within the cleaning chamber during cleaning of the catheter. A connection member is present and is attached to the distal end. The connection member is configured for releasably engaging a heat and moisture exchanger so that the catheter may be advanced through the distal end into the heat and moisture exchanger.

The present invention provides a plug for a respiratory suction catheter and manifold assembly that protects or maintains at least one internal component, such as the flap, of an assembly during nonuse. In a preferred embodiment, the interior plug element functions or contains a spring or similar expanding mechanism. This provides for additional security for the internal components. Further, the plug may contain an exterior plug element as well as an interior plug element.

Another preferred embodiment comprises a valve, most preferably a flap valve distal of the wiper seal within the manifold, improves the cleaning of the catheter by selectively restricting or occluding the retracted catheter.

A popoid connector for use with other medical devices such as tracheal tubes, intubation tubes and aspiration and ventilation systems comprises a plurality of saucer shaped members each having a first portion and a second portion to form a corrugated portion along the connector. On side of each of the saucer shaped members is provide with at least one circumscribing reinforcing rib to provide additional structural support for the popoid connector. The reinforcing ribs are integrally formed with the popoid connector. The reinforcing ribs inhibit transverse collapsing of the popoid connector add rigidity to the popoid connector when the popoid connector is in a bent position.
