A media includes a set of adjacent edges of material and a segment along only a portion of the set of edges. The segment has a first identifiable end and a second identifiable end.

Media identification

A document feeder includes a tray for holding one or more document sheets and a first flag disposed adjacent to the tray so as to engage a document sheet in the tray. A second flag is disposed adjacent to the tray to engage the document sheet so that the first and second flags produce balanced amounts of friction on the document sheet.

This invention relates to a cover attached to an output device that is connected to an imaging device. The purpose for this cover is to avoid output motion and media movement detection in high security areas, such as banks, insurance companies or the like. Such structures of this type, generally, provide an alert mechanism to the imaging device to forward the printed output to the covered output device.

Apparatus and method to avoid detecting output motion and media movement

Detection of a potential user of an imaging device is utilized to begin the initialization of the imaging device prior to when the user is expected to access the imaging device. By beginning the initialization process prior to the user's expected access of the device, wait time experienced by the user may be reduced without a need to continuously maintain the device in a full powered-up state or even to maintain the device in a stand-by state.

Device initialization in response to a remote event

A system and method for improved accessibility of media output from a media processing device. Media receivers are coupled to an actuator such that the media receivers can be moved under manual command by a user, or automatically by a controller. Movement selectors are provided for activation thereof by a user. The user selects a media receiver for movement, and then the desired direction of movement. The media receiver is moved to a position most convenient for the user so that the media in the media receiver is most accessible to that user. In an illustrative embodiment, a laser printer with a plurality of paper trays is adapted to the present invention.

Media accessibility in a media processing device

Imaging apparatus and methods include providing an input support surface to support input imaging media and an output support surface to support output imaging media. The input support surface is configured to move relative to the output support surface, wherein such movement is in response to the drawing, or picking, of input imaging media from the input support surface, and wherein such movement is also proportional to the quantity of input imaging media picked from the input support surface.

A roller for use in an imaging system includes a variable hardness, fluid-pressurizable roller core, and a roller cover surrounding the roller core. A source of pressurized fluid can be used to pressurize the roller core to a fixed, predetermined pressure prior to installation of the roller core in an imaging system. Alternatively, a variable-pressure source of pressurized air can be used to variably pressurize the roller core during operation of the imaging system.

A sheet feeding system has a pick roller, a first roller, and a second roller. The ends of the first and second rollers are coupled together. The pick roller acquires, or picks, a sheet from a stack of sheets and passes the sheet to the first and second rollers. One of the first and second rollers discourages unintended sheets passed with the sheet picked from the stack. The other of the first and second rollers advances the sheet. A logic processor evaluates interchange conditions and activates a drive mechanism when the evaluated interchange conditions reaches a threshold value. The drive mechanism interchanges the first and second rollers so that the second roller becomes the first roller and the first roller becomes the second roller.

Swapping feed and separation rollers

A media processing system retrieves a sheet of media and transports it to an imaging process. Misalignment of media from retrieving and transporting is removed by a media realignment process which wedges the leading edge of the media into stopped rollers while additionally advancing the trailing edge of the media for a predetermined distance. The media flexes and forms an arching buckle which aligns parallel to the leading edge of the media with the stopped rollers, thereby removing the skew of the media in relationship with the stopped rollers. The amount of over-advancement of the trailing edge of the media is modified according to the stiffness of the media. A media stiffness sensor measures the media stiffness by quantifying the deflection of the media when a portion of the media is cantilevered into deflection-measuring sensors. Imaging processes are also improved by employing media stiffness measurements to modify imaging processes.

An imaging media supply tray for providing imaging media to a feed mechanism of an imaging system a first access area adapted and constructed to contain a first quantity of imaging media in a position capable of exposing the first quantity of imaging media to the feed mechanism. A second access area adapted and constructed to contain a second quantity of imaging media in a position capable of exposing the second quantity of imaging media to the feed mechanism. A securing mechanism is adapted and constructed to selectively secure the imaging media supply tray in the imaging system in a first orientation connecting the first access area to the feed mechanism, or in a second orientation connecting the second access area to the feed mechanism.
