An valve assembly for automatically shutting off the flow of a pressurized liquid to a storage tank includes a cam that is rotated in response to the level of a liquid in the storage tank. A follower moves a poppet valve axially with a housing as a nonlinear function of rate of cam rotation. The poppet valve is moved to a closed position to terminate flow of a liquid to the storage tank whenever the liquid level within the storage tank reaches a predetermined level.

A fuel nozzle has a modular construction wherein valve, venturi and spout modules are mounted in a bore formed in a nozzle body. The main fuel valve is controlled, independently of fuel pressurization, in response to a mechanical signal input, acting through a servo valve. The mechanical signal input is provide by a finger displaced trigger, acting through a pivotal lever arm and latching means that form part of the automatic shut off means for preventing overfill of a fuel tank. The venturi module has a venturi passage for generating a vacuum employed in the automatic shut off mechanism. The venturi module includes a bypass passage that enables sufficient vacuum force to be generated at both high and low flow rates. The spout module comprise an extruded spout (including a venturi vent passage) and a pair of mechanical adapter shells that are mechanical locked onto the spout and mechanically locked to the nozzle body, to secure the several modules in assembled relation.

Dispensing nozzles

An apparatus and method for sealing and accessing the end of a fill pipe connected to a pressurized fuel reservoir. The cap has a body, a sealing member for sealing between the cap and the adapter ring, a fastening system for fastening the cap body to the end of the pipe, and a valve system for venting the pressurized gaseous media in fuel reservoir. The valve system has an inlet exposed to the pressurized gaseous media contained in the fuel reservoir, an outlet exposed to a volume external to the reservoir. A flow path extends through the cap body between the inlet and the outlet, and a valving member movably disposed in the flow path that is adapted for manual activation to selectively provide fluid communication between the inlet and the outlet.

A valve assembly for automatically shutting off the flow of a pressurized liquid to a storage tank includes a cam that is rotated in response to the level of a liquid in the storage tank. A follower moves a poppet valve axially with a housing as a nonlinear function of rate of cam rotation. The poppet valve is moved to a closed position to terminate flow of a liquid to the storage tank whenever the liquid level within the storage tank reaches a predetermined level.

Storage tank shutoff valve

An emergency valve is provided to shut off the flow of fuel in the event a fuel dispenser is struck with sufficient force to rupture the fuel conduit means therefor. The valve comprises a lower housing connected to a source of pressurized fuel and an upper housing connected to conduit means which extend to a dispensing nozzle. The upper housing has a groove which defines the plane of a weakened portion. When the impacted with a relatively high lateral force, the portion of the upper housing, above the groove, will separate, or break away. A normally open, main control, flapper valve is mounted in the lower housing. A poppet check valve is mounted in the upper housing. When the separable portion of the upper housing breaks away, both the flapper valve and the check valve automatically close to minimize spillage of fuel. A bleed valve is provided to relieve pressure in the fuel conduit means to which the separable portion of the upper housing is connected, in the event a fire occurs upon its breaking away. In one embodiment the check valve yieldingly engages a seat formed in the upper end of the upper housing, immediately above the notch and is opened by fuel flow pressure. In another embodiment the check valve is normally held open by a post projecting upwardly from a bridge mounted beneath the groove. In a third embodiment, the poppet valve is also held in an open position by a similar post and is engageable with a seat formed in the upper staff ace of the upper housing. The upper housing and check valve comprises a replacement unit which can be mounted on existing lower housing to provide the benefits of the present invention or to replace an upper housing when an accident occurs.

Emergency shut-off valves

An emergency valve is provided to shut off the flow of fuel in the event a fuel dispenser is struck with sufficient force to rupture the fuel conduit means therefor. The valve comprises a lower housing connected to a source of pressurized fuel and an upper housing connected to conduit means which extend to a dispensing nozzle. The upper housing has a groove which defines the plane of a weakened portion. When the impacted with a relatively high lateral force, the portion of the upper housing, above the groove, will separate, or break away. A normally open, main control, flapper valve is mounted in the lower housing. A poppet check valve is mounted in the upper housing. When the separable portion of the upper housing breaks away, both the flapper valve and the check valve automatically close to minimize spillage of fuel. A bleed valve is provided to relieve pressure in the fuel conduit means to which the separable portion of the upper housing is connected, in the event a fire occurs upon its breaking away. In one embodiment the check valve yieldingly engages a seat formed in the upper end of the upper housing, immediately above the notch and is opened by fuel flow pressure. In another embodiment the check valve is normally held open by a post projecting upwardly from a bridge mounted beneath the groove. In a third embodiment, the poppet valve is also held in an open position by a similar post and is engageable with a seat formed in the upper surface of the upper housing. The upper housing and check valve comprises a replacement unit which can be mounted on existing lower housing to provide the benefits of the present invention or to replace an upper housing when an accident occurs.

An emergency vent valve for fuel storage tanks comprises a body member and a cover pivotally mounted thereon. The body member has a central passage which is sealed by cover in its closed position. The cover is held in this closed position by resetable latch means, which are responsive to a predetermined storage tank, vapor pressure to release the cover for displacement to an open position. In the open position, the cover is generally upright to provide an alert that the valve has been actuated. The latching means comprise a latch pin, mounted on the cover and a latch link, pivotal on the body member, having a cam surface, which is engaged by the latch pin to hold the cover in its closed position. A screw enables adjustment of the initial position of the latch link to vary the relative angle between the cam surface and the latch pin, to thus adjust the vapor pressure to which the valve is responsive.

A swivel construction and method of making the same are provided, the construction comprising a body member and an adaptor member, each member having opposed ends and having a passage passing through the ends thereof, one end of the body member and one end of the adaptor member being disposed in telescoped relation, the construction having a retainer disposed between the telescoped ends and tending to hold the members in the telescoped relation while permitting swivel movement therebetween, the construction having a seal disposed between the telescoped ends and tending to seal the telescoped ends together while permitting swivel movement therebetween, the construction having a bearing disposed between the telescoped ends and intermediate the retainer and the seal, the construction having structure for causing the seal to leak a certain amount after the retainer has worn away the bearing a certain amount but is still maintaining the one ends in the telescoped relation thereof.

Swivel construction and method of making the same

A nozzle construction has an end of a spout member threaded into an opening of an adaptor member until the members are disposed in a predetermined threaded condition thereof. One of the members then has a portion thereof deformed into a locking position with the other of the members to tend to prevent relative threading movement between the members from the predetermined threaded condition.

Nozzle construction and method of making the same

A modular dispensing nozzle particularly adapted for dispensing gasoline and constructed for easy repair and low pressure drop is provided with a novel automatic shut-off mechanism which terminates fluid flow through the nozzle in response to predetermined conditions.

A fluid dispensing nozzle has a first venturi created between a seat ring and a movable, resiliently biased poppet valve. The resistance of the movable poppet valve is decreased as the flow rate increases by a second venturi effect, which reduces the pressure in a chamber formed within the movable poppet valve.

Fluid dispensing nozzle

A liquid dispensing nozzle has an annular member of a relatively soft material at one end of a bellows, which is disposed in spaced relation to the spout of the nozzle to form an annular vapor return passage therebetween, to engage the fill pipe to form a seal therewith when the spout is disposed therein so that the vapors flow from the tank to the annular vapor return pasage of the nozzle. The soft seal member is removably fastened to the end of the bellows for easy replacement. The spout has a pair of latch rings thereon spaced from each other with each having a retaining lug to enable the spout to be retained within any type of fill pipe since one of the lugs on one of the latch rings is always capable of being retained by the lip of the fill pipe opening.

An automatic shut-off nozzle has a venturi effect, which causes automatic shut off of the liquid flow through the nozzle body by causing a main poppet valve to be closed when the tank is filled, created by two aligned passages of different diameters in either the resiliently biased bleeder poppet valve, which opens in response to the pressure of the fluid flowing through the nozzle body, or the seat ring for the bleeder poppet valve. The smaller diameter passage has the liquid enter its inlet with the liquid exiting through the outlet of the larger diameter passage with the larger diameter passage also communicating with the vacuum chamber in which the vacuum is increased by the venturi when the tank is filled to cause automatic closing of the main poppet valve in the nozzle body.

Liquid flow through an automatic shut-off nozzle is automatically stopped when liquid is present at a predetermined location in the vapor return means. The automatic shut-off nozzle also stops flow in response to the tank being filled to a predetermined level with liquid or the pressure in the tank exceeding a predetermined pressure.
