A closed vessel apparatus for rapidly determining the burning rate of uncd propellant. Apparatus includes a closed vessel enclosing a propellant in a holder. An ignition wire is mounted in the vessel for igniting the propellant. A pressure transducer is provided for detecting the pressure rise in the vessel and an electronic circuit triggers the start and stop of pressure integration. This data is fed to a data print out circuit.

Apparatus for determining the burn rate of uncured propellant

A silicon compound as a burning rate catalyst for a solid propellant comption is disclosed along with the solid propellant composition for which the silicon compound is an effective catalyst. The silicon compound is selected from a class of silicon compounds characterized by having one or more silicon bonds selected from silicon to hydrogen bonds, silicon to nitrogen bonds, and silicon to carbon bonds. Representative silicon compounds of the described class of compounds include p-bis(dimethylsilyl) benzene, tris(dimethylsilyl) amine, triethylsilane, hexamethyldisilane, bis(dimethylamino) dimethylsilane, bis(dimethylamino) methylsilane, octylsilane, hexamethylcyclotrisilazane, and dimethyldiicyanatosilane. The burning rate of the solid propellant composition varies as a function of the silicon content in the propellant composition which is additionally comprised of hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene binder, an optional bonding agent which is the reaction product formed from equimolar quantities of 12-hydroxystearic acid and tris [1-(2-methylaziridinyl)]phosphine oxide, an optional quick cure catalyst of triphenyl bismuthine, an oxidizer of 1 micrometer ultrafine ammonium perchlorate and 90 micrometers ammonium perchlorate, aluminum metal powder fuel, and a curing agent of isophorone diisocyanate.

By use of the reaction for the preparation of biurets from isocyanates (i, condensation products of isocyanates and water) a variety of tri-functional isocyanates are made available as the curing agents for rubbery-solid-filled compositions employing hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) binder to obtain beneficial binder chain extension and crosslinking functions. The tri-functional isocyanates are prepared by the reaction of three moles of a diisocyanate selected from the diisocyanates consisting of dimeryl diisocyanate, isophorone diisocyanate, and trimethylhexamethylene diisocyanate with one mole of water in an appropriate solvent (e.g., p-dioxane). The reaction occurs at solvent reflux temperature. The reaction must be carried out under a blanket of dry nitrogen. The product, a triisocyanate, is obtained ready for use at the end of the reaction when the solvent is stripped from the reaction product. The product achieves improved mechanical properties for a composition containing high solids loadings of either inert ingredients or oxidizer and combustible ingredients depending on intended use for the composition.
