The present invention includes curable compositions adapted to coat substrates. In one embodiment, the composition includes an antioxidant selected from terpene materials; vitamin materials different from the terpene materials; and combinations thereof in an amount of about 0.00001 weight percent to about 5 weight percent based upon the weight of the substrate. In another embodiment, the composition includes (a) an antioxidant selected from terpene materials; vitamin materials different from the terpene materials; and combinations thereof in an amount effective to inhibit oxidation of the composition; and (b) a film-forming material capable of forming a substantially uniform continuous coating on the substrate. Also included are substrates and sized glass fibers coated with such compositions and fabrics woven from such coated fibers. Other aspects of the present invention include methods for inhibiting the oxidation of a coating composition adapted to coat substrates.

Glass fibers are prepared with a chemical treatment resulting in chemically treated glass fibers having utility in reinforcing thermoplastic polymers such as polyolefins. The chemically treated glass fibers have a dried residue of an aqueous chemical treating composition having one or more amino organo coupling agents, an aqueous emulsion of an acid or anhydride modified polyolefin having one or more surfactants, wherein the polyolefin is neutralized with an organic or inorganic base with a basicity less than the basicity of the amino moiety of the coupling agent, a binder stabilizer, one or more film forming polymers, and water. The aqueous chemical treating composition is essentially free of cationic lubricants that are amidated fatty acids and polyvinyl acetate homopolymer. The chemically treated glass fibers can be prepared in a wet chop or dry chop process, wherein the chopped glass fiber strands eventually have a moisture content of less than 20 weight percent prior to volatilization of the formed moisture. The chemically treated glass fibers are used to reinforce thermoplastic polymers such as polyolefins and particularly polypropylene in any molding operation to produce glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic articles.

Strands of chemically treated glass fibers of the present invention result in fiber reinforced polar thermosetting and thermoplastic polymers having good strength properties. The chemically treated glass fibers are treated with the an aqueous chemical treating composition having an epoxy polyurethane copolymer or a polyepoxide resin with blocked polyisocyanate functionality, and at least one or more organo coupling agents. The epoxy polyurethane copolymer or epoxy with polyisocyanate functionality can be chain extended with organic polyols. The blocked polyisocyanates can be either partially or fully blocked. Also the aqueous chemical treating composition can have one or more cationic and/or nonionic fiber lubricants, epoxy polyvinly acetate copolymer in conjunction with an ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer or an epoxy polymer and mixtures of the fiber lubricant with the polymeric materials.

Sized glass fibers and reinforced polymers containing same

Treated glass fibers are provided that are more dispersible in aqueous media. The glass fibers are treated with a composition having a nonionic surfactant and a cationic quaternary ammonium salt surfactant. The composition may be added simultaneously or sequentially with the chopped glass fibers to the aqueous media in which the glass fibers are to be dispersed. Also, glass fibers can be treated with an aqueous treating composition having the composition and produced into wet or dry chopped glass fibers having a length of about 1/16 of an inch to about 3 inches. The treated glass fibers have good dispersibility in aqueous media with or without the addition of dispersing agents.

Treated glass fibers and nonwoven sheet-like mat and method

Strands of chemically treated glass fibers of the present invention result in fiber reinforced polar thermosetting and thermoplastic polymers having good strength properties. The chemically treated glass fibers are treated with the an aqueous chemical treating composition having an epoxy polyurethane copolymer or a polyepoxide resin with blocked polyisocyanate functionality, and at least one or more organo coupling agents. The epoxy polyurethane copolymer or epoxy with polyisocyanate functionality can be chain extended with organic polyols. The blocked polyisocyanates can be either partially or fully blocked. Also the aqueous chemical treating composition can have one or more cationic and/or nonionic fiber lubricants, epoxy polyvinyl acetate copolymer in conjunction with an ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer or an epoxy polymer and mixtures of the fiber lubricant with the polymeric materials.

Chemically treated glass fibers in the form of continuous bundles of glass fibers and chopped bundles of glass fibers are provided that have good handleability and thermal aging characteristics in reinforcing thermoplastic polymers. The chemically treated glass fibers have a dried residue of an aqueous chemical treating composition. The aqueous chemical treating composition has two aqueous soluble, dispersible, or emulsifiable film forming polymers which can be either epoxy polymers and polyurethane polymers or epoxy polyurethane copolymers and polyurethane polymers and an amino alkyl functional silane coupling agent and at least a second silane coupling agent which can be a lubricant modified amine organo functional silane coupling agent, a polyamino organo functional silane coupling agent, an epoxy organo functional silane coupling agent or a vinyl organo functional silane coupling agent and a reaction product process aid. The reaction product process aid is obtained by reacting alkoxylated nitrogen-containing compound such as an alkoxylated fatty amine and an alkoxylated fatty amide with a polycarboxylic acid to produce a product which is reacted with an epoxide compound. The amount of water in the aqueous chemical treating composition is that to give an effective solids content for treating the glass fibers. The chemically treated glass fibers as chopped bundles of glass fibers are suitable for reinforcing such thermoplastic polymers as polybutylene terephthalate, polyphenylene sulfide, polyphenylene oxide and polyacetals.

Chemically treated glass fibers for reinforcing polymeric matrices

An aqueous sizing composition has an aqueous emulsion containing an organic peroxide solid at 20.degree. C. having improved stability and dilutability. The aqueous emulsion has the solid organic peroxide, which, for example, can be a bisperoxide or peroxy ester, solubilized in an effective amount of an organic peroxide that is a liquid at 20.degree. C. for example, a bisperoxide or peroxyester. The emulsion has one or more cationic, anionic or nonionic lubricants in effective amounts to disperse the peroxides in water. The emulsion also has sufficient amounts of water to make an oil-in-water emulsion. In addition to the emulsion, the sizing composition has an organo silane coupling agent and lubricant and possibly a film forming polymer.

Aqueous peroxide emulsion for use with glass fibers

An aqueous treating composition, treated glass fiber strands and glass fiber strand mat formed therefrom is provided that enables the production of glass fiber mat reinforced thermoplastic polymers having improved stampability. The aqueous treating composition has a combination of organic silane coupling agents, where one is a vinyl-containing organic silane coupling agent and the other is a saturated amino-organic silane coupling agent. The amino silane coupling agent is present in an amount in the range of about 1 to about 40 weight percent and the vinyl-containing organic silane is present in an amount in the range of about 60 to about 99 weight percent, both amounts based on the amount of the combined silane coupling agents. The combined amount of the silane coupling agents is in the range of about 0.5 to about 10 weight percent of the aqueous treating composition. In addition there is present a heat stable organic peroxide, a glass fiber lubricant and a nonionic surfactant. Optionally a film forming polymer and/or a softening agent can also be incorporated into the aqueous treating composition. Glass fiber strands treated with the aqueous treating composition can be processed into a continuous glass fiber strand mat that is needled and used to reinforce thermoplastic polymers such as polyolefins, polyamides, and polyalkylene terephthalates.

An aqueous emulsion of an organic peroxide that is liquid at a temperature of 20.degree. C. and that is insoluble or has limited solubility in water is provided that has improved shelf-stability, shear-stability and process stability and has good dilutability and has a particle size of around 1.5 microns or less. The emulsion has from about 1 weight percent of the emulsion to about 70 weight percent of the emulsion of an organic peroxide that is a liquid at 20.degree. C. and in particular that has a half-life exceeding 60 hours at 212.degree. F. (100.degree. C.) and 20 minutes at 300.degree. F. (149.degree. C.) The emulsion also has about 0.005 to about 15 weight percent of the emulsion of a nonionic emulsifier blend. The emulsifier blend has three emulsifiers selected from polyalkylene glycol ethers, dialkylaryl polyether alcohols, and polyoxy-propylene-polyoxyethylene condensates and the like nonionic emulsifiers having a particular HLB range for each of the three emulsifiers. The remaining weight percent of the emulsion is water. The method of preparing the aqueous emulsion involves the addition of the emulsifier blend to the liquid peroxide. One of the emulsifiers is split into two portions for the addition. The aqueous organic peroxide-containing emulsion is incorporated into a sizing composition for treating glass fibers to produce treated glass fibers for use as reinforcement in polymers.

Continuous glass fiber with a polyolefin compatible sizing composed of a coupling agent, a stabilizer, a lubricant, a non-crosslinking film forming polymer, softening agent and surfactant are disclosed for utilization in polyolefin polymer reinforcement. The article formed and formation method for fiber combination with a polyolefin polymer are also disclosed.
