A surgical system comprising a surgical instrument and a surgical hub is disclosed. The surgical instrument is configured to perform a surgical procedure and comprises a housing, a shaft assembly, an end effector, and a sensor configured to sense a parameter associated with a function of the surgical instrument. The surgical hub comprises a processor and a memory. The memory stores instructions executable by the processor to receive data from the sensor, wherein the data comprises the parameter associated with the function of the surgical instrument; infer a step of the surgical procedure being performed by the surgical instrument, based on the data from the sensor; receive data from a database, wherein the data from the database is associated with the step of the surgical procedure; compare a value of the parameter to the data received from the database; and control the surgical instrument based on the comparison.

A surgical system comprising an end effector, a closure driver, a force sensor, and a control circuit is disclosed. The end effector comprises a first jaw and a second jaw rotatable relative to the first jaw between an open position and a closed position. The closure driver is configured to apply a closure force to the second jaw to rotate the second jaw toward the closed position. The force sensor is to measure a parameter indicative of the closure force. The control circuit is to receive an output of the force sensor indicative of the parameter and set a velocity of the closure driver based on the received output and a force threshold.

A staple cartridge is disclosed. The staple cartridge can comprise a cartridge body comprising a deck and a bottom surface opposite the deck. The staple cartridge can comprise a plurality of staple cavities, wherein each staple cavity extends into the cartridge body from the deck to the bottom surface. Additionally, a plurality of wells can be defined into the staple cartridge from the deck to a lowermost surface of the well. A plurality of staples can be removably positioned in the staple cavities. The staple cartridge can comprise a tissue thickness compensator releasably secured to the cartridge body, wherein the tissue thickness compensator comprises a compensator body and a plurality of extensions extending from the compensator body into the wells, wherein at least one extension is compressed within one of the wells. Each well can surround at least one staple cavity and/or can extend between at least two staple cavities.

In at least one instance, the surgical instrument comprises a shroud and the operation of the surgical instrument is modified based on input from a sensing circuit configured to sense a parameter of the shroud. A surgical instrument including a surgical end effector and a threaded rotary input shaft. An actuator member is in operable engagement with the surgical end effector and is in selective threaded engagement with the threaded rotary input shaft such that when the actuator member is in an engaged configuration, rotation of said threaded rotary input shaft causes the actuator member to move axially to impart an actuation motion to the surgical end effector and when the actuator member is in a disengaged configuration, rotation of the threaded rotary input shaft will not be imparted to the actuator member. A switch may be employed for selectively moving the actuator between the engaged and disengaged configurations. A locking system may be employed for preventing axial movement of the actuator member when the actuator member is in the disengaged configuration.

A resilient member is arranged at a proximal end of one of the anvil half or the cartridge half, and a projection is arranged at a proximal end of the other of the anvil half or the cartridge half. The resilient member is configured to contact and releasably couple with the projection to thereby couple the proximal end of the anvil half with the proximal end of the cartridge half while the latching member is in the open position.

A surgical stapling instrument including a staple sled which can be advanced and/or retracted relative to first and second jaw members, wherein the staple sled can be configured to deploy staples from a staple cartridge in one of the first and second jaw members. In at least one embodiment, the other of the first and second jaw members can include an anvil having at least one forming surface which can be configured to deform the staples as they are deployed from the staple cartridge. In at least one form of the invention, the anvil can be movably adjustable relative to the staple cartridge in order to adjust the distance in which the staples are deformed. In various embodiments, the anvil can be adjusted by a slidable adjusting plate and/or a rotatable cam.
