Electrical enclosures are provided that include arc resistant features designed to add structural strength for arc containment, to inhibit arc propagation, and/or to direct the release of pressure within and/or from the enclosure in order to provide arc resistant electrical enclosures. In general, the arc resistant features may be designed to provide enclosures where in the event of an arc fault, the doors and covers remain closed, parts are not ejected from the enclosure, holes are not produced in the enclosure, indicators located in close proximity to the enclosure do not ignite, and/or grounding connections remain effective. Further, the foregoing features may be designed to provide electrical enclosures that comply with industry guides and standards for arc resistant ratings.

Arc resistant electrical enclosure

The present technique, applicable to low voltage, medium voltage, and high voltage MCCs and other power management systems, provides for substantially containing and directing an arcing fault and resultant ionized gases within a stab enclosure or housing disposed in the MCC. For example, the stab housing may have reduced stab-openings at the power bus interface to diminish the potential of an arc flash (and ionized gases) from reaching the power buses. Furthermore, phase-to-phase isolation barriers may be employed within the stab housing to reduce the potential of an arcing fault going phase-to-phase. Moreover, to reduce arc flash damage within the MCC, the walls and barriers, including walls around the stabs, within the housing may be configured to direct the arc on a preferred path to a desired location within the housing to extinguish the arc in less than 0.1 second or 6 cycles, or even less than 0.033 second or 2 cycles.

A bus support system is provided. The bus support system includes a bus support having a plurality of vertical channels configured to receive vertical bus conductors, each of the plurality of vertical channels having a rear protrusion on a rear side of the bus support. The bus support system also includes a plurality of add-on bus support braces disposed on the rear side of the bus support and configured to contact the plurality of channels to limit a movement of the vertical bus conductors during a high current event.

Bus support system for a motor control center

A venting system is described for use with electrical enclosures in which hot gasses may be generated by certain types of fault. The venting assembly may be mounted to a surface of the enclosure, such as adjacent to an aperture formed in the enclosure door. The vent assembly includes a series of louvers that divert all gasses flowing from the enclosure and provide no direct path for gas. The vent assembly thus provides unimpeded flow of hot gasses during a fault event to divert and cool the gasses before exiting the enclosure. The vent assembly may be configured as a cartridge-type insert mounted either inside or outside the enclosure.

Arc resistant baffle for reducing arc-flash energy in an electrical enclosure

A multi-latch compatible system is disclosed for electrical enclosures. The system accommodates latches of different types and configurations. A rail structure may be formed to interface with pin-type latches and with plate-type latches. The rail structure may be configured as a pre-assembled insert that can be placed within an electrical enclosure. The system permits the same general structure to be used regardless of the type of latching mechanism selected and installed in the enclosure.

Common structure and door for multiple door electrical enclosure latching systems

A packaged electrical system includes an enclosure and a main interior volume for component supports. The component supports may support electrical, electronic, power electronic and similar components, as well as switchgear and the like. A main power wireway is provided adjacent to the main interior volume of the enclosure for accommodating three phase power conductors. A network and control power wireway is formed separately from the main power wireway. The network and control power wireway may be formed toward the rear of the main interior volume, and may accommodate plug-in connections between component supports and network conductors and control power conductors. The network and control power wireway is thus accessible through a separate door from the main power wireway.

A latch device is provided for an electrical enclosure. The latch device includes a latch plate which is movable between extended and retracted positions. In the extended position, the latch plate allows a door to be secured over an opening in the enclosure. In the retracted position, the latch plate permits unencumbered access to components and mounting structures within the enclosure, such as for removal of a mounting unit. The latching mechanism may bias the enclosure door to a closed position, while permitting movement of the door, without unlatching of the mechanism, during fault conditions within the enclosure, such as to permit the escape of hot gasses.

Arc resistant electrical enclosure system and method

A bus support system is disclosed that accommodates three-wire three-phase circuitry and four-wire three-phase circuitry. A main bus support element is designed to receive horizontal bus bars and vertical bus bars for installation in an electrical enclosure. The main support element is supplemented by an add-on bus support element where a neutral bus is required for four-wire three-phase operation.

A connector arrangement for packaged electrical systems, such as motor control centers includes a component connector assembly mounted to component supports for providing network signals and control power to components on the support. A mating prewired connector assembly in the enclosure is forced to mate with the component connector assembly when the component support is fully engaged within the enclosure. Thereafter, the component support may be partially withdrawn from the enclosure to disconnect main power from the component support, while leaving network connections and control power connections by virtue of the mated connectors. The connectors engage by non-sliding contact both when fully engaged and when the components are partially withdrawn from the enclosure.

A reduced form factor component support is provided for motor control centers and similar packaged electrical systems. The reduced form factor component support may be used with smaller components, such as small motor starters, motor drives, and so forth. Electrical connections with standard bus bars in the enclosure are made through special connectors mounted on subplates in the rear of the enclosure, or by an invertible stab housing that can allow the reduced form factor component support to share conventional slots in a bus cover, thereby providing access to the supply power in the enclosure.

Multiple height, high density horizontal low voltage motor control center

A motor control system comprising a plurality of motor controllers and a power source adapted to drive an electric motor. The motor control system comprises a switch that is selectively operable between at least a first position and a second position. In the first position, the power source is coupled to a first controller to provide the power to drive the electric motor. In the second position, the power source is coupled to a second controller to provide the power to drive the electric motor. The switch also electrically isolates the input and the output of the first controller from the power source when the manual bypass switch is positioned in the second position.

System and method for bypassing a motor drive

In one embodiment, the components within each respective unit of the MCC are connected powered by a connector assembly that is directly engaged to secondary power and network data conductors disposed of within the enclosure. The connector assembly, if so desired, will maintain connection even upon disengagement of the unit from the main power supply. This service position can be employed to provide a safe environment for diagnostic testing and repair of the unit. In another embodiment, the secondary power and network data conductors may by carried over an open rail system. This embodiment provides a convenient means of quickly and easily engaging the secondary power and network data conductors to the unit. Another embodiment provides a method for placing the unit into a service position.

Motor control center interconnection method and apparatus

A technique for supplying power and data signals to panel-mounted components includes distribution of power and data conductors in a trunk wireway and further distribution to component locations via drop cable assemblies disposed in drop wireways. The drop cable assemblies and trunk cable assemblies may include identical cable. The cables have a plurality of parallel conductors in an insulated jacket. Connectors are mounted on the drop cable assemblies for receiving plug-in component cable assemblies routed to individual components mounted within component panels or bays. The components are thus electrically coupled in parallel with one another and may receive both power and data signals via the drop and trunk cable assemblies coupled to a network. Individual components may be independent installed and removed for servicing with interrupting service to upstream or downstream components in the system.
