Lubricant compositions are made containing, as a metal protectant additive, an overbased amorphous alkaline earth metal salt of fatty acid. The additive is added in either a liquid or powdered form to the base oil in the composition. The overbased additive in the lubricating composition serves as a metal protectant to provide detergency, friction-modifying and acid-neutralizing properties to the compositions.

Shelf stable haze free liquids of overbased alkaline earth metal salts are obtained by reacting metal base with fatty acids in the presence of liquid hydrocarbon and aliphatic alcohols having at least 8 carbon atoms to provide overbased liquids essentially free of a phenol or a phenolic derivative. Stabilizer compositions containing the overbased liquids and mixed metal stabilizers of zinc, cadmium and tin are provided for stabilizing halogen-containing polymers.

Powdered overbased amorphous alkaline earth salts are made which consist essentially of isolated solid agglomerated micelles of amorphous alkaline earth metal salts complexed with an amorphous alkaline earth metal carboxylate of a fatty acid. The process for making the powder involves precipitating and isolating the solid particles from liquid overbased alkaline earth metal compositions.

The present invention relates to novel compounds corresponding to the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.4 may be the same or different, and each is a lower alkyl radical; R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 may be the same or different, and each is a substituted piperidine radical; M is equal to the total number of monomer units in the polymer chain, and is of a magnitude sufficient to provide a polymer having a molecular weight of at least 500; W is equal to at least 0.5, X is equal to at least 0.1 but not greater than 0.2, Y is equal to at least 0.1, Z is equal to at least 0.05 but not greater than 0.2, and W plus X plus Y plus Z is equal to 1. These novel compounds are useful as stabilizers for a wide variety of organic materials and are prepared by transesterification of a suitable acrylate-methacrylate copolymer.

Amide or 3-alkylation of 2,2,5,5-tetra-substituted imidazolidin-4-ones, using either monofunctional or polyfunctional cyclic ethers as alkylating agents, under basic conditions, or an ethylene carbonate. The cyclic ether reactants may be aldehydes or ketones having a single carbon atom in the ring. The alcohols obtained from ether addition to the 2,2,5,5-tetrasubstituted imidazolidin-4-ones may be converted to esterified derivatives by treatment with carboxylic acids or esters.
