A method of manufacturing a display system includes forming a display element having a display active area over a silicon backplane, forming a display driver integrated circuit (DDIC), and bonding the display element to the display driver integrated circuit (DDIC). The display active area may include a light emitting diode such as an organic light emitting diode (OLED). Separately forming the display and the display circuitry may simplify formation of the OLED and allow for a higher density control interface between the display and the DDIC.

Low cost micro OLED structure and method

A method including determining a maximum luminance location of a display based on a field of view of an eye of a user of the display, and driving a plurality of light sources in the display based on locations of the plurality of light sources with respect to the maximum luminance location of the display. The plurality of light sources is controlled to have different luminance levels in different display zones corresponding to different zones on the retina of the eye of the user. In some examples, the display zones of the display system that have higher luminance levels can be dynamically changed based on the field of view or the gaze direction of the eye of the user.

Methods of driving light sources in a near-eye display

An electronic display includes a display panel that operates in a single display mode to provide a single display, or a dual display mode to provide two displays separated by an inactive region. The electronic display includes the display panel and a panel driver. The display panel includes a left pixel region, a right pixel region, and a middle pixel region between the left and right pixel regions. In the single display mode of the electronic display, the panel driver provides first gate signals generated from first input data to the left, right, and middle pixel regions. In a dual display mode, the panel driver provides second gate signals generated from second input data to the left and right pixel regions. The first input data has a first resolution that is larger than a second resolution of the second input data.

A device such as a micro-OLED includes a display element having a display active area disposed over a silicon backplane and a display driver integrated circuit (DDIC) electrically coupled to the display element through at least one contact that extends through the silicon backplane. Through silicon via (TSV) technology may be used to form the contacts. A chip-on-flex architecture may be used to orient and attach the DDIC to the silicon backplane.

Example devices may include a display (such as an emissive display), and a controller, where the controller is configured to determine an image content parameter for a displayed image shown on the display, and adjust a duty ratio of the display based on the image content parameter. The duty ratio may be dynamically adjusted based on, for example, an image content parameter that may be related to the brightness of the image, or a portion thereof. The controller may be configured to determine an image content parameter for each of one or more portions of a displayed image, and adjust a duty ratio for corresponding parts of the display based on the image content parameter associated with the respective one or more portions of the displayed image.

Content-adaptive duty ratio control

A display device dynamically determines pixel settle times to reduce a display latency. The display device includes a backlight unit (BLU) for providing light for displaying an image, a plurality of pixels for modulating the light provided by the BLU, and a controller circuit for controlling the BLU and the plurality of pixels. The controller circuit determines a settle time from display data for a current display frame and display data for a previous display frame, and turns on the BLU based on the determined settle time. The determined settle time corresponding to an expected amount of time for the plurality of pixel to transition from a first state corresponding to the display data for the previous display frame to a second state corresponding to the display data for the current display frame.

Display latency reduction

Ghost image formation due to reflections of image light by a display panel to an ocular lens may be suppressed by ensuring that the image light reflected by the lens does not get reflected by the display panel back towards the lens. To that end, the display panel may include a quarter-wave birefringent layer between the top polarizer of the display panel and a layer inside the display panel that the image light reflects from, such as a black grid layer or an active matrix layer.

In one embodiment, a computing system may determine a first region and a second region of an image based on gaze data of a user. The second region of the image may be displayed with lower image resolution. The system may access a first pixel value associated with the first region of the image and cause a first source driver circuit to generate a first pixel signal. The first pixel signal may be configured to control a luminance of a first number of pixels of the display. The system may access a second pixel value associated with the second region of the image and cause a second source driver circuit to generate a second pixel signal. The second pixel signal may be configured to control a second number of pixels, which is larger than the first number and may include a longer pulse duration than the first pixel signal.

Systems and methods for displaying foveated images

Embodiments relate to a display device with reduced scanning time by using a reference line separate from a data line to improve frame rate of the display device. A first pixel in a first row samples a reference voltage during a first period and samples a data voltage during a second period. A second pixel in a second row adjacent to the first row samples the reference voltage during a third period and samples the data voltage during a fourth period, where the third period overlaps with at least a portion of the second period. The reference voltage is provided by the reference line that is connected to a reference buffer, and the data voltage is provided by the data line connected to a source driver circuit.

A display device dynamically determines a duration of the illumination period for a display frame to adjust an average brightness of a display device as the framerate dynamically changes. The display device includes a backlight unit (BLU) for providing light for displaying an image, a plurality of pixels for modulating the light provided by the BLU, and a controller circuit for controlling the BLU. The controller circuit measure a duration of a previous frame and determine a duration for an illumination period of a current frame based on the measured duration of the previous frame. The control circuit then controls the BLU based on the determined duration of the illumination period for the current frame.

Adaptive backlight activation for low-persistence liquid crystal displays

A structured film for use with a display comprises an optically transmissive surface including a plurality of walls. When the film is placed in an operative position with respect to the display, the walls extend away from the display at different heights and surround light emitters of the display. The film operates as a diffraction grating and the walls are configured to generate selected diffraction orders for each light emitter, including generating a diffraction order for a first light emitter and a diffraction order for a second light emitter adjacent to the first light emitter such that a predefined portion of light energy radiated by the first light emitter is permitted to spread toward the second light emitter. The film minimizes the screen-door effect and can be used in combination with local contrast control over a region of interest.
