The invention relates to a device and to a method for visual assistance during the electrophysiological use of a catheter in the heart, enabling electroanatomic 3D mapping data relating to an area of the heart to be treated to be visualized during the use of the catheter. Before the catheter is used, 3D image data of a body region containing the area to be treated is detected by means of a method for tomographic 3D imaging. The area to be treated or significant parts thereof are extracted from said 3D image data, in order to obtain selected 3D image data. The electroanatomic 3D mapping data and the selected 3D image data obtained are then classed in terms of position and dimension, and are adjacently visualized, for example, during the catheter ablation. The inventive method and associated device enable the orientation of the operator to be improved during the use of a catheter in the heart.

A multilevel image segmentation technique using graph cuts is disclosed. A reduced resolution image is generated from a full resolution image which is to be segmented. The reduced resolution image is then segmented in order to identify a boundary between an object and a background within the image. The identified boundary then identifies a portion of an increased resolution image which is segmented in order to refine the earlier identified boundary. The steps may be iterated for successively increasing image resolutions in order to refine the boundary as required by a particular application. An initial identification of object and background portions of the image may be provided as input by a user. Alternatively, a user may identify only the object portion, and the background portion may be automatically determined.

A method for registering a two-dimensional image of a cardiocirculatory structure and a three-dimensional image of the cardiocirculatory structure includes acquiring a three-dimensional image including the cardiocirculatory structure using a first imaging modality. The acquired three-dimensional image is projected into two-dimensions to produce a two-dimensional projection image of the cardiocirculatory structure. A structure of interest is segmented either from the three-dimensional image prior to projection or from the projection image subsequent to projection. A first distance map is generated based on the two-dimensional projection image and a second distance map is generated based on the acquired two-dimensional image. A registration of the three-dimensional image and the two-dimensional image is performed by minimizing a difference between the first and second distance maps.
