A device and method for stabilizing a drug, particularly a chiral drug or the active enantiomer(s) thereof, in a carrier composition of a transdermal delivery system prior to the systems use by providing a product packaging system to prevent or control degradation reactions that can result from certain packaging materials and moisture contamination, while at the same time providing a child-resistant wrapping for the transdermal system.

Packaging system for transdermal drug delivery systems

Disclosed is a dermal composition comprising enalapril ethyl ester or another prodrug corresponding to a pharmaceutically active form of an ACE inhibitor in an amount corresponding to a therapeutically effective amount of enalaprilat (or other pharmaceutically active form of enalapri) or pharmaceutically active form of the ACE inhibitor in admixture with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. In a preferred embodiment, the carrier is a pressure-sensitive adhesive matrix comprising a polymer or polymer blend. The dermal composition is applied in a method of substantially increasing the flux of enalaprilat through the skin of a human or an animal by maintaining the dermal composition in contact with the skin.

Transdermal administration of ACE inhibitors

A transdermal composition and related method are described. Specifically, the transdermal composition is substantially free of gestodene or substantially free of isopropyl myristate and substantially free of lower alkanols and comprises: (a) a therapeutically effective amount of a pharmacologically active drug which is subject to acid catalyzed degradation; (b) a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier; and (c) a penetration enhancing effective amount of a functional derivative of a fatty acid.
