Temperature sensors, pressure sensors, methods of making the same, and methods of detecting pressures and temperatures using the same are provided. In an embodiment, the temperature sensor includes a ceramic coil inductor having a first end plate and a second end plate, wherein the ceramic coil inductor is formed of a ceramic composite that comprises carbon nanotubes or, carbon nanofibers, or a combination of carbon nanotubes and carbon nanofibers thereof dispersed in a ceramic matrix; and a thin film polymer-derived ceramic (PDC) nanocomposite disposed between the first and the second end plates, wherein the thin film PDC nanocomposite has a dielectric constant that increases monotonically with temperature.

Temperature and pressure sensors and methods

Metamaterials are provided that may include a first substrate including a high temperature dielectric material, and a first array of conductive resonators arranged on the first substrate. The conductive resonators may include a noble metal, a noble metal alloy, a high temperature ceramic semiconductor, or a combination thereof. Radomes including metamaterials also are provided.

Hybrid composite materials including carbon nanotube sheets and flexible ceramic materials, and methods of making the same are provided herein. In one embodiment, a method of forming a hybrid composite material is provided, the method including: placing a layer of a first flexible ceramic composite on a lay-up tooling surface; applying a sheet of a pre-preg carbon fiber reinforced polymer on the flexible ceramic composite; curing the flexible ceramic composite and the pre-preg carbon fiber reinforced polymer sheet together to form a hybrid composite material; and removing the hybrid composite material from the lay-up tooling surface, wherein the first flexible ceramic composite comprises an exterior surface of the hybrid composite material.

Composite materials are provided which may include one or more sheets of carbon fibers woven in orthogonal direction bundles; carbon nanotubes embedded within pores between the bundles; and a matrix material in which the one or more sheets and the carbon nanotubes are embedded. In one case, the carbon fibers lie substantially in an x-direction and a y-direction and the carbon nanotubes are oriented substantially in a z-direction, which is substantially perpendicular to the x- and y-directions. Methods for making the composite materials are also provided.

Three-dimensional multi-reinforced composites and methods of manufacture and use thereof

Provided herein are methods of making composite materials. The methods may include infiltrating a carbon nanoscale fiber network with a ceramic precursor, curing the ceramic precursor, and/or pyrolyzing the ceramic precursor. The infiltrating, curing, and pyrolyzing steps may be repeated one or more times. Composite materials also are provided that include a ceramic material and carbon nanoscale fibers.

Provided herein are methods of manufacturing a ceramic article. The methods may include providing a liquid-state pre-ceramic polymer component, disposing the liquid-state pre-ceramic polymer component on a support, curing the liquid-state pre-ceramic polymer component, and subjecting the pre-ceramic polymer to pyrolysis. Methods of aligning fibers with an electric field are provided. The fibers may include dielectric fibers, such as carbon fibers. The fibers may be aligned in a liquid that is curable. Composite materials also are provided that include aligned fibers.

Methods for aligning fibers with an electrical field and composite materials

Composite structures and methods of their manufacture are provided. In one embodiment, the composite structure includes a substrate which includes a relatively soft material, and nanoparticles which include a relatively hard material and which are embedded (i) within at least a surface region of the substrate, or (ii) uniformly within and throughout the substrate, in an amount effective to improve the wear resistance of the substrate. Methods for forming these composite structures include a hot-rolling process, a roll-bonding process, or a combination thereof.
