An apparatus and method provides improved guidance instructions to providers of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) compressions in a cardiac arrest event. The apparatus detects CPR rate and/or changes in CPR rate, and issues prompts related to checking the depth of compressions based upon the rate/rate change detection. The prompts may be aural or visual.

A defibrillator (AED) and method for using a defibrillator using two different ECG analysis algorithms which work sequentially to improve the accuracy of AED shock decisions. A first algorithm, such as (ART), is particularly suited for analysis in the presence of CPR periods. A second algorithm, such as (PAS), is particularly suited for analysis during hands-off periods. The AED switches algorithms depending on the period and on the current analysis of the cardiac rhythm. The inventions thus provide an optimized ECG analysis scheme in a manner that improves the effectiveness of the rescue, resulting in more CPR 'hands-on' time, better treatment of refibrillation, and reduced transition times between CPR and electrotherapy.

Automated external defibrillator (AED) with dual ECG analysis algorithms

A defibrillator (AED) using an ECG analysis model or algorithm which can function in two different modes. The ECG analysis model is particularly suited for analysis during periods of CPR. Both modes of operation reach a shock decision in essentially the same way, where one or more ECG data segments indicate a shockable cardiac condition. In one mode of operation, the shock decision is irreversible once made. In another mode of operation, the shock decision is reversible if one or more subsequent ECG data segments indicate a no-shock decision. Improved specificity of the model is obtained without undue degradation of sensitivity to shockable ECG.

Apparatus for reversing a shock decision in an automated external defibrillator

An automated external defibrillator (AED) is described which includes two electrocardiogram (ECG) analyzers. One of the ECG analyzers is suitable for use only for ECG which is signal-noise-free, and thus may be used during 'hands-off' analysis periods in which no cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) compressions can be provided. The length of the 'hands-off' analysis period can be shortened by use of the second ECG analyzer in concert with the first ECG analyzer. Thus, a greater proportion of CPR time through the course of a cardiac arrest rescue is achieved.

A heart rate monitor () for detecting a pulse of a person () employs a platform (), a plurality of multi-axis accelerometers (R,L) and a pulse detector (). The multi-axis accelerometers (R,L) are adjoined to the platform () to generate differential mode signals (A, A) indicative of a sensing by the accelerometers () of physiological motion () of the person () relative to acceleration sensing axes (R,L) and to generate common mode signals (A, A, A, A) indicative of a sensing by the accelerometers (R,L) of extraneous motion by the person () relative to the acceleration sensing axes (R,L). The pulse detector () is operably connected to the multi-axis accelerometers (R,L) to generate a pulse signal (PS)as a function of a vertical alignment of the acceleration sensing axes (R,L) combining the differential mode signals (A, A) and cancelling the common mode signals (A, A, A, A).
