A latching relay employing a movable cantilever with a first permanent magnet and a nearby second magnet is disclosed. The permanent magnet affixed to the cantilever is permanently magnetized along its long (horizontal) axis. The cantilever has a first end associated to the first pole (e.g., north pole) of the first magnet, and a second end associated to the second pole (e.g., south pole) of the first magnet. When the first end of the cantilever approaches the second magnet, the first pole of the first magnet induces a local opposite pole (e.g., south pole) in the second magnet and causes the first end of the cantilever to be attracted to the local opposite pole of the second magnet, closing an electrical conduction path (closed state). An open state on the first end of cantilever 10 can be maintained either by the second pole of first magnet being attracted to a local opposite pole in the second magnet or by a mechanical restoring force of flexure spring which supports the cantilever. A magnetic generator provides a third magnetic field about the first magnet and produces a torque on the associated cantilever to force the cantilever to switch in one of the closed, neutral and open states.

Electromechanical latching relay and method of operating same

A system that senses proximity includes a magnet producing a magnetic field and a sensor having a switch. The switch includes a cantilever supported by a supporting structure. The cantilever has a magnetic material and a longitudinal axis. The magnetic material makes the cantilever sensitive to the magnetic field, such that the cantilever is configured to move between first and second states. The switch also includes contacts supported by the support structure. The switch can be configured as a reed switch. When the magnet moves relative to the sensor, the cantilever interacts with a respective one of the contacts based on the position of the magnet during movement.

Micro magnetic proximity sensor system

Micro magnetic switching apparatus includes a permanent magnet supported on a base and a coil supported by the base so as to define a plurality of sides. A plurality of latching micro magnetic relays each includes a magnetic cantilever positioned to open a first electric circuit in a first orientation and to close the first electric circuit in a second orientation. One each of the relays is mounted adjacent each of the plurality of sides of the coil and adjacent the permanent magnet so as to be latched in one of the first and second orientations when the coil is not activated and to switch to the other of the first and second orientations when the coil is activated and to be latched in the other of the first and second orientations by the permanent magnet.

Micro magnetic switching apparatus and method

Micro magnetic position sensor apparatus includes a magnet for producing a magnetic field, a fixed contact, and a cantilever having magnetic material positioned therein to produce a torque on the cantilever in the magnetic field, the torque tending to align the cantilever with magnetic field lines in the magnetic field. The cantilever is mounted to provide it with a first position in electrical connection with the fixed contact and a second position in electrical disconnect with the fixed contact. The cantilever is further mounted so as to be normally in one of the first and second positions and movable to the other of the first and second positions when the magnetic field lines in the magnetic field are altered relative to the cantilever by proximity of an external object.

Micro magnetic proximity sensor apparatus and sensing method

Image scanner and display apparatus including an array of organic electroluminescent devices, each device operating as a light emitter when forward biased and as a light detector when reverse biased. Electronics coupled to the array and having a display mode and a scanner mode, the electronics sequentially forward biasing the array of organic electroluminescent devices, one row at a time, to emit light in the display mode, and sequentially forward biasing alternate columns of devices to emit light, one column at a time, and reverse biasing an associated column of devices for detecting light in the scanning mode, whereby light emitted from a forward biased column and reflected by information being scanned is received by the reverse biased associated column.

Image scanner and display apparatus

An integrated electro-optical package including a plurality of organic light emitting devices (LEDs) directly interconnected to external driver circuits utilizing a printed circuit board, having formed therein a plurality of plated through-hole vias and a method of fabricating the integrated electro-optical package. The organic LEDs are fabricated on a supporting substrate and include vertical interconnections to driver and control circuits mounted on an uppermost surface of a printed circuit board (PCB). The vertical interconnections are formed utilizing plated through-hole conductive vias formed in the printed circuit board, conductive leads, and conductive epoxy. A hermetic seal is formed by positioning a sealing ring formed on the printed circuit board in sealing contact with a sealing area on the surface of the substrate so as to hermetically seal the organic light emitting devices.

Method of manufacturing an integrated electro-optical package

A precharge driver for light emitting devices with an associated capacitance, the precharge driver including a driver coupled to a light emitting device so as to supply a substantially square wave of current to the light emitting device and a precharge circuit coupled to the driver so as to activate the driver to supply a pulse of current to the associated capacitance of the light emitting device to rapidly charge the associated capacitance at an initial portion of the square wave of current, whereby a resultant substantially square wave of current is applied to the light emitting device.

A smart driver in combination with an LED including a column driver coupled to one terminal of the light emitting device and a row driver coupled to another terminal of the light emitting device to form an addressed circuit. A controllable power supply having terminals coupled to the column and row drivers and a control terminal connected to control power applied between the terminals in response to a control signal supplied thereto. A control circuit coupling the addressed circuit to the control terminal and supplying a unique control signal thereto, whereby a unique amount of power is applied to the addressed circuit.
