The present invention generally relates to solar water heaters, in particular to solar water heaters using glass vacuum tubes as both solar energy collector and thermal energy storage device, without a hot water storage tank. To improve the efficiency of thermal energy storage, a novel medium for thermal energy storage is disclosed, which utilizes the heat of solution of aluminum sulphate, comprising water and 40% to 47% of Al(SO). The working temperature range of such energy storage medium is between 50&#xb0; C. and 100&#xb0; C. The energy storage medium is contained in plastic capsules, submerged in water and placed in glass vacuum tubes.

A pitch-synchronous method and system for speech coding using timbre vectors is disclosed. On the encoder side, speech signal is segmented into pitch-synchronous frames without overlap, then converted into a pitch-synchronous amplitude spectrum using FFT. Using Laguerre functions, the amplitude spectrum is transformed into a timbre vector. Using vector quantization, each timbre vector is converted to a timbre index based on a timbre codebook. The intensity and pitch are also converted into indices respectively using scalar quantization. Those indices are transmitted as encoded speech. On the decoder side, by looking up the same codebooks, pitch, intensity and the timbre vector are recovered. Using Laguerre functions, the amplitude spectrum is recovered. Using Kramers-Kronig relations, the phase spectrum is recovered. Using FFT, the elementary waves are regenerated, and superposed to become the speech signal.

Pitch synchronous speech coding based on timbre vectors

The present invention defines a pitch-synchronous parametrical representation of speech signals as the basis of speech recognition, and discloses methods of generating the said pitch-synchronous parametrical representation from speech signals. The speech signal is first going through a pitch-marks picking program to identify the pitch periods. The speech signal is then segmented into pitch-synchronous frames. An ends-matching program equalizes the values at the two ends of the waveform in each frame. Using Fourier analysis, the speech signal in each frame is converted into a pitch-synchronous amplitude spectrum. Using Laguerre functions, the said amplitude spectrum is converted into a unit vector, referred to as the timbre vector. By using a database of correlated phonemes and timbre vectors, the most likely phoneme sequence of an input speech signal can be decoded in the acoustic stage of a speech recognition system.

System and method for speech recognition using pitch-synchronous spectral parameters

The present invention discloses a parametrical representation of prosody based on polynomial expansion coefficients of the pitch contour near the center of each syllable. The said syllable pitch expansion coefficients are generated from a recorded speech database, read from a number of sentences by a reference speaker. By correlating the stress level and context information of each syllable in the text with the polynomial expansion coefficients of the corresponding spoken syllable, a correlation database is formed. To generate prosody for an input text, stress level and context information of each syllable in the text is identified. The prosody is generated by using the said correlation database to find the best set of pitch parameters for each syllable. By adding to global pitch contours and using interpolation formulas, complete pitch contour for the input text is generated. Duration and intensity profile are generated using a similar procedure.

A solar-powered air conditioning system including an energy-storage medium made of a mixture of 5%-20% glycerin, 2.5%-10% alcohol and water in a thermally insulated container is disclosed. While frozen, the said energy storage medium becomes slurry of thin sheets of ice dispersed in liquid, which will not damage the container and the heat-exchange pipes. The system uses a solar photovoltaic panel to directly drive a vapor-compression refrigeration unit to freeze the said energy storage medium. A ventilation system forces air through a heat-exchange coil in the said energy-storage medium, to generate chilled air to cool the space. In the absence of sunlight, the energy-storage medium can keep frozen for days. With or without sunlight, the flowing air chilled by the frozen energy-storage medium continues to cool the room or the entire building.

The most accurate method of finding the true north is through astronomical observations, for example, by observing the position of the sun. However, the procedure is complicated. The instantaneous position of the sun must be calculated from astronomical data for each instance of observation, and the operator must wait for the predetermined time to come. Elaborate manual adjustments are required. The present invention discloses an automatic solar compass comprising a cylindrical omni-directional lens, a detection means, and a servomechanism. It is as easy to use as the magnetic compass, but much more accurate and reliable than the magnetic compass.

Sundials and solar compasses including are disclosed. Some embodiments include an omni-directional lens, which can focus a sun beam into a sharp spot with a long depth of field. By projecting the spot onto a cylindrical panel, both the day of the year and the time of the day can be read off simultaneously with very high accuracy. Because of the simultaneous displaying of time and date, no equation-of-time correction is required. If the time is known, the true north can be determined with high accuracy, and the device becomes a reliable and easy-to-use solar compass.

A solar-powered refrigerator is disclosed. It uses a solar photovoltaic panel to convert solar energy to electricity to power a DC motor. The DC motor drives the compressor of a vapor-compression refrigeration system to freeze an energy-storage vessel, located in the freezer. The energy-storage vessel is filled with a mixture of glycerin, alcohol and water, with a freezing point of 10&#xb0; F. to &#x2212;10&#xb0; F. In the absence of sunlight, the temperature of the frozen mixture can maintain near its freezing point for more than one day. The temperature of the refrigerator is maintained to a desirable value, for example 37&#xb0; F., by a pair of heat-exchange coils and a thermostat, with or without sunlight.

Techniques for providing an automated conversational name dialing system for placing a call in response to an input by a user. One technique begins with the step of analyzing an input from a user, wherein the input includes information directed to identifying an intended recipient of a telephone call from the user. At least one candidate for the intended recipient is identified in response to the input, wherein the at least one candidate represents at least one potential match between the intended recipient and a predetermined vocabulary. A confidence measure indicative of a likelihood that the at least one candidate is the intended recipient is determined, and additional information is obtained from the user to increase the likelihood that the at least one candidate is the intended recipient, based on the determined confidence measure.

Methods and apparatus for conversational name dialing systems

An apparatus and a method for imaging the mouth area laterally to produce reliable measurements of mouth and lip shapes for use in assisting the speech recognition task. A video camera is arranged with a headset and a microphone to capture a lateral profile image of a speaker. The lateral profile image is then used to compute features such as lip separation, lip shape and intrusion depth parameters. The parameters are used in real time, during speech recognition process to characterize and discriminate spoken phonemes to produce a high degree of accuracy in automatic speech recognition processing, especially in a noisy environment.

Phonetic Chinese (Pinyin and BPMF) is entered into a computer system and accurately converted into the Hanzi form. The system has a novel keyboard with diacritic keys (and corresponding ASCII coding) that permit the user to annotate each entered phonetic text syllable with a diacritic that indicates the tone of the syllable. A process executing on the system determines that a syllable has been entered when a diacritic (or delimiter) key is struck. An entered phonetic syllable is then compared to a list of acceptable phonetic syllables and abbreviations. If the entered syllable is on the list, the correctly spelled and accented syllable is stored in memory and displayed on a phonetic portion of a graphical display. The process continues for succeeding syllables until a delimiter is entered. Upon encountering a delimiter, the word string (defined as the string of characters between two delimiters) is analyzed using morphological and syntactical processes and/or a statistical language model to unambiguously determine the proper Hanzi characters that represent the word(s) in the word string. The unique Hanzi translation is stored in memory and displayed on a Hanzi portion of the graphical interface.

In a speech recognition system which recognizes a spoken utterance consisting of a sequence of spoken words and, in response, outputs a sequence of decoded words, a method for automatically punctuating the sequence of decoded words is provided. In a vocabulary of items including words, silences, and punctuation marks, assigning at least one baseform to each punctuation mark corresponding to one of silence and a non-word noise. Additionally, the method includes the step of automatically inserting a subject punctuation mark at a given point in the sequence of decoded words when an acoustic score and a language model score associated with the subject punctuation mark produce a higher combined likelihood than the acoustic score and the language model score associated with any other item in the vocabulary for the given point in the sequence of decoded words.

A method and apparatus for extracting pitch value information from speech. The method selects at least three highest peaks from a normalized autocorrelation function and produces a plurality of frequency candidates for pitch value determination. The plurality of frequency candidates are used to identify anchor points in pitch values, and is further used to perform both forward and backward searching when an anchor point cannot be readily identified. The running mean or average of determined pitch values is maintained and used in conjunction with the identified valid pitch values in a final determination of the pitch estimation using a weighted least squares fit for identified non-valid frames.
