The method includes a cable modem (CM) receiving a generic service identifier (G-SID) included in a corresponding information element (IE) in a data over cable service interface specification (DOCSIS) upstream bandwidth allocation MAP message. The G-SID is a unique identifier assigned to the CM. The method includes the CM transmitting the upstream data for one or more service flows of the CM via at least a portion of the CM bandwidth allocation.

The system includes: a convergence device, a cable modem terminal system CMTS assembly, and a cable modem CM, where the convergence device is connected to the CM using the CMTS assembly. The method includes: obtaining a fault group in an HFC network; collecting a pre-equalization coefficient of at least one cable modem (CM); enabling a reference fault point that is corresponding to the fault group and whose location is known; collecting the pre-equalization coefficient of the at least one CM again; and determining a relative distance between each fault point in the fault group and the reference fault point according to the pre-equalization coefficient collected twice. By monitoring information transferred between an active optical line terminal (OLT) and a broadband network gateway (BNG), the aggregation node finds a fault in time according to the monitored information and when a fault occurs, the aggregation node starts a local protection solution, enables a corresponding backup port connected to a backup OLT corresponding to the active OLT, and disables an active port connected to the active OLT. Through the method, when the active OLT is switched to the backup OLT, the aggregation node performs joint switching, which ensures normal communication.
