A lithium ion battery includes an anode and a cathode. The cathode includes a lithium, manganese, nickel, and oxygen containing compound. An electrolyte is disposed between the anode and the cathode. A protective layer is deposited between the cathode and the electrolyte. The protective layer includes pure lithium phosphorus oxynitride and variations that include metal dopants such as Fe, Ti, Ni, V, Cr, Cu, and Co. A method for making a cathode and a method for operating a battery are also disclosed.

Lipon coatings for high voltage and high temperature Li-ion battery cathodes

A solid electrolyte for a lithium battery includes LiGeAsSwhere x=0 to 0.50. The value of x can be a range of any high value and any lower value from 0 to 0.50. For example, x can be 0.25 to 0.50, and x can be 0.3 to 0.4, among many other possible ranges. In one embodiment x=0.33 such that the solid electrolyte is LiGeAsS. A solid electrolyte for a lithium battery can include LiAsSwherein &#xbd; to &#x2154; of the As is substituted with Ge. A lithium battery and a method for making a lithium battery are also disclosed.

Lithium-conducting sulfur compound cathode for lithium-sulfur batteries

The fundamental charge storage mechanisms in a number of currently studied high energy redox couples are based on intercalation, conversion, or displacement reactions. With exception to certain metal-air chemistries, most often the active redox materials are stored physically in the electrochemical cell stack thereby lowering the practical gravimetric and volumetric energy density as a tradeoff to achieve reasonable power density. In a general embodiment, a mediated redox flow battery includes a series of secondary organic molecules that form highly reduced anionic radicals as reaction mediator pairs for the reduction and oxidation of primary high capacity redox species ex situ from the electrochemical cell stack. Arenes are reduced to stable anionic radicals that in turn reduce a primary anode to the charged state. The primary anode is then discharged using a second lower potential (more positive) arene. Compatible separators and solvents are also disclosed herein.

A solid state lithium carbon monofluoride battery includes an anode comprising Li, a solid electrolyte, and a cathode including CFand LPS. The cathode can also include a carbon compound. The solid electrolyte can include LPS. The LPS can include &#x3b2;-LiPS. The cathode LPS can include &#x3b2;-LiPS. A method of making a battery is also disclosed.

All-solid state lithium carbon monofluoride batteries

The invention is directed in a first aspect to a sulfur-carbon composite material comprising: (i) a bimodal porous carbon component containing therein a first mode of pores which are mesopores, and a second mode of pores which are micropores; and (ii) elemental sulfur contained in at least a portion of said micropores. The invention is also directed to the aforesaid sulfur-carbon composite as a layer on a current collector material; a lithium ion battery containing the sulfur-carbon composite in a cathode therein; as well as a method for preparing the sulfur-composite material.

Sulfur-carbon nanocomposites and their application as cathode materials in lithium-sulfur batteries

The invention is directed to a method for producing metal-containing (e.g., non-oxide, oxide, or elemental) nano-objects, which may be nanoparticles or nanowires, the method comprising contacting an aqueous solution comprising a metal salt and water with an electrically powered electrode to form said metal-containing nano-objects dislodged from the electrode, wherein said electrode possesses a nanotextured surface that functions to confine the particle growth process to form said metal-containing nano-objects. Electrochemical method for synthesizing metal-containing particles and other objects

A solid electrolyte for a lithium-sulfur battery includes particles of a lithium ion conducting oxide composition embedded within a lithium ion conducting sulfide composition. The lithium ion conducting oxide composition can be LiLaZrO(LLZO). The lithium ion conducting sulfide composition can be &#x3b2;-LiPS(LPS). A lithium ion battery and a method of making a solid electrolyte for a lithium ion battery are also disclosed.

High conducting oxide&#x2014;sulfide composite lithium superionic conductor

Method of forming lithium-containing electrolytes are provided using wet chemical synthesis. In some examples, the lithium containing electrolytes are composed of &#x3b2;-LiPSor LiPS. The solid electrolyte may be a core shell material. In one embodiment, the core shell material includes a core of lithium sulfide (LiS), a first shell of &#x3b2;-LiPSor LiPS, and a second shell including one of &#x3b2;-LiPSor LiPSand carbon. The lithium containing electrolytes may be incorporated into wet cell batteries or solid state batteries.

Lithium sulfide compositions for battery electrolyte and battery electrode coatings

A carbon monolith includes a robust carbon monolith characterized by a skeleton size of at least 100 nm, and a hierarchical pore structure having macropores and mesopores.
