A method of correcting and detecting errors in a sector of data stored in a DVD format is provided. The method includes: calculating an initial error detection value for data within the sector, performing an error correction operation on the data within the sector and determining an updated, intermediate error detection value responsive to the error correction operation, using a target error detection value and one of the initial error detection value and the intermediate error detection value to determine that the sector doesn't include errors, processing an outer code to provide a set of error patterns and error locations, and determining if any of the error locations are for data within the sector and not correcting data corresponding to the error locations within the sector.

An operational setting of a function, such as an output signal format, is automatically determined based on the country information.

A method for managing an external memory of a microprocessor so that the external memory only contains one copy of a common area. By providing an address translator, mapping the page and the address of the common area of the page pointed by a microprocessor to the physical address of the common area of the external memory, using the address translator to translate a page and an address pointed by a microprocessor to a physical address of the external memory, and using the microprocessor to access data stored at the physical address of the external memory; the memory can be more efficiently used.

Method for managing an external memory of a microprocessor

The present invention more efficiently retrieves and processes data stored on an optical disk in a DVD-ROM format. Generally, the retrieval and processing of data includes inner and outer code error correction for a Reed-Solomon product like code and an error detection process for evaluating an extent of errors in a sector of data. For this device, the sector of data is encoded within a plurality of inner codes and parts of plural sectors encoded within each outer code. The device calculates an initial and an intermediate error detection value for data within the sector. The target for the error detection value is non-zero because the data within the sector are scrambled. If there is a match between the initial or intermediate error detection value, the sector can be presumed to be free of errors. Decisions as to whether error correction operations are to be made or how error correction operations are to be performed are then made on the basis of the knowledge that some or all of the sectors within a block of DVD-ROM are free of errors.

Method and apparatus for error processing in optical disk memories

Data read out from a mass storage unit are provided as a serial data stream in parallel to both a buffer memory and an error detection circuit. The read out data are stored within the buffer memory. At the same time, the error detection circuit performs an error detection operation on the serial data stream read out from the mass storage unit. The error detection operation consists of dividing a segment of the serial data stream corresponding to a data block by the error check polynomial and determining the remainder of the division operation. The remainder from this initial error division operation is stored. Error correction is then performed on the data stored in the buffer memory, for example using a Reed-Solomon code. When erroneous bytes are identified by the error correction circuitry, the error equations are solved to determine the error pattern and then the erroneous byte is overwritten in the buffer memory. The location of the erroneous byte within the serial data stream, along with the error pattern of the byte, are then used to calculate a correction to the remainder from the initial error division by the error check polynomial on the read in data stream. Error correction continues until the remainder is reduced to a zero value. At this point, it is assumed that all of the errors have been corrected and the data stored in the buffer memory is provided to the data bus of the host computer.
