A cutting element may include a substrate having a non-planar upper surface with a peripheral edge, and an ultrahard layer. The upper surface may include at least one depression formed at least proximate the peripheral edge; and a compressive stress hoop extending around the upper surface adjacent the peripheral edge, extending into the at least one depression, and configured to reduce tensile stress in the ultrahard layer. The ultrahard layer may be on the substrate and may have a non-planar top surface and an interface formed between the ultrahard layer and the substrate.

Non planar cutting element with non planar interface design and tools incorporating such elements

A needle for a choke valve assembly includes a base portion formed from a first non-superhard material and a tip portion formed from a superhard material. The needle also includes a brazed connection coupling the tip portion to the base portion. The brazed connection includes an insert formed from a second non-superhard material, in which the second non-superhard material is harder than the first non-superhard material and softer than the superhard material. In addition, the brazed connection includes a shim disposed between the insert and the base portion, a first layer of brazing material disposed between the base portion and the shim, and a second layer of brazing material disposed between the shim and the insert.

Needle for a choke valve assembly

A drilling tool having a body, at least one blade extending from the body, and a first cutting element attached to the at least one blade. The first cutting element includes a cutting face at an opposite axial end from a base, a side surface extending from the base to the cutting face, an edge formed at the intersection between the cutting face and the side surface, and an elongated protrusion formed at the cutting face and extending between opposite sides of the edge. The elongated protrusion has a geometry including a border extending around a concave surface, a face chamfer formed around the border, and sloped surfaces extending between the border and the edge. Downhole cutting tool having cutting element with nonplanar face to improve cutting efficiency and durability

A cutting element includes a substrate and an ultrahard layer on an upper surface of the substrate, a top surface of the ultrahard layer having a ridge extending along a major dimension of the top surface from an edge of the top surface, where the ridge has a peak with at least two different roof radii of curvature, and at least two sidewalls sloping in opposite directions from the peak of the ridge at a roof angle, where a first roof angle of the ridge proximate the edge is smaller than a second roof angle in a central portion of the ridge around a longitudinal axis of the cutting element.

A cutting element has a cutting face at an opposite axial end from a base, a side surface extending from the base to the cutting face, an edge formed at the intersection between the cutting face and the side surface, and an elongated protrusion formed at the cutting face and extending between opposite sides of the edge, wherein the elongated protrusion has a geometry including a border extending around a concave surface and sloped surfaces extending between the border and the edge, and wherein the concave surface has a major axis dimension measured between opposite sides of the border and a minor axis dimension measured perpendicularly to the major axis dimension and ranging from 50 percent to 99 percent of the major axis dimension.

A cutting device for use in a drill bit has a body including an ultrahard material. The body has a top surface, a front surface, and at least one lateral surface adjacent the top surface. The lateral surface is oriented at a surface angle relative to the top surface between 30 and 150 degrees. One or more locking features are located on the lateral surface.
