Electromagnetic probes for analyzing a flowing multi-phase fluid are described herein. The probes generally use a probe assembly for measuring liquid properties in a multiphase fluid flowing in a conduit, the probe assembly comprising a first member with a probe portion and a connection portion, the probe portion having a central bore with a conductor and a pressure-resistant insulator surrounding the conductor, the conductor extending from an opening at a distal end of the probe portion into the connection portion, the connection portion having a connector coupled to a distal end of the connection portion, the connection portion having a seal face with a groove extending around the probe portion; and a second member that, when assembled, is in direct contact with the first member at the distal end of the connection portion to apply compression and to retain the first member against a wall of the conduit.

Multiphase flow meters and related methods are disclosed herein. An example apparatus includes an inlet manifold; an outlet manifold, first and second flow paths coupled between the inlet and outlet manifolds; and an analyzer to determine a flow rate of fluid flowing through the first and second flow paths based on a parameter of the fluid flowing through the first flow path.

Multiphase flow meters and related methods

A method for analyzing flow of a multiphase fluid through a flowmeter is provided. In one embodiment, the method includes transmitting two beams of electromagnetic radiation along different paths through a multiphase fluid and detecting the two transmitted beams with detectors. The method also includes determining a gas fraction and a water-in-liquid ratio of the multiphase fluid. The gas fraction is determined based on the detected first beam of electromagnetic radiation and the water-in-liquid ratio of the multiphase fluid is determined based on the detected second beam of electromagnetic radiation. Additional systems, devices, and methods are also disclosed.

Dual-beam multiphase fluid analysis systems and methods

Methods and apparatus for detecting water in multiphase flows are disclosed. An example apparatus includes a conduit including an inlet to receive a multiphase flow and an electromagnetic sensor coupled to a liquid-rich region of the conduit to measure a permittivity of the multiphase flow, and a water detection manager to determine that water is detected in the multiphase flow based on the permittivity.

Methods and apparatus for water detection in multiphase flows

A technique facilitates evaluation of a fluid, such as a fluid produced from a well. The technique utilizes a modular and mobile system for testing flows of fluid which may comprise mixtures of constituents, and for sampling fluids thereof. The multiphase sampling method includes flowing a multiphase fluid comprising an oil phase and a water phase through a first conduit, the oil phase and water phase at least partially separating in the first conduit, mixing together the oil phase and water phase to form a mixed bulk liquid phase by flowing the multiphase fluid through a flow mixer toward a second conduit downstream the flow mixer, sampling a portion of the mixed bulk liquid phase at location at or within the second conduit, wherein the sampled portion of the mixed bulk liquid phase has a water-to-liquid ratio (WLR) representative of the pre-mixed oil phase and water phase.

Systems, tools, and methods for enhancing a measurement of a fluid in a borehole, pipe, conduit and/or the like involve an electromagnetic measurement tool that includes a transmitting antenna configured to transmit electromagnetic energy, a receiving antenna configured to receive the electromagnetic energy, and a metamaterial element comprising a negative refractive index. The metamaterial element may focus the electromagnetic energy. The electromagnetic system may comprise one or more antennas that are disposed adjacent to or in contact with the fluid, electromagnetic energy may be transmitted via the transmitting antenna, and the electromagnetic energy may be received with the receiving antenna to measure a property of the fluid.

Use of metamaterial to enhance measurement of dielectric properties of a fluid

A tomography system for determining properties of flowing multiphase fluid, comprising a duct having a duct wall and interior space within the duct wall for carrying a flow of the multiphase fluid and a plurality of sensors, which are electrodes or coils, at positions distributed around the duct wall on a planar cross section through the duct, wherein the sensors (electrodes or coils) are used for making a plurality of measurements of electrical or magnetic properties through the duct wall and the multiphase fluid; and a processor is used to receive measurement data from the sensors and to compute from the measured properties to derive quantitative values of at least one property selected from permittivity, conductivity, magnetic permeability and complex-conductivity of the multiphase fluid independent of effects external to the fluid flow, such as effects of the duct walls and the geometry of the positioning of the sensors (electrodes or coils).

Tomography of multiphase mixtures

An apparatus includes a pipe through which a multiphase fluid flows, with a transparent window structure formed in the pipe. A collimated light source emits light through the transparent window structure into the pipe having a wavelength at which a component of a desired phase of the multiphase fluid is absorptive. A photodetector is positioned such that the emitted light passes through the multiphase fluid in the pipe to impinge upon the photodetector. The photodetector has an actual dynamic range for collimated light detection. Processing circuitry is configured to continuously adjust a power of the collimated light source dependent upon an output level of the photodetector so as to cause measurement of the emitted light over an effective dynamic range greater than the actual dynamic range, and determine a property of the multiphase fluid as a function of the power of the collimated light source.

Phase fraction measurement using continuously adjusted light source

Disclosed herein is an apparatus including a structure containing a multiphase fluid and having a transparent window. A collimated light source emits light through the transparent window structure at a wavelength at which a component of a desired phase of the multiphase fluid is absorptive. A photodetector is positioned such that the emitted light passes through the multiphase fluid in the structure and out through the transparent window structure to impinge upon the photodetector. The photodetector has an actual dynamic range for light detection. Processing circuitry adjusts a power of the collimated light source in a series of steps dependent upon a relationship between an output level of the photodetector and a threshold to cause measurement of the emitted light over an effective dynamic range greater than the actual dynamic range. Properties of the multiphase fluid are determined as a function of the measured emitted light.

Phase fraction measurement using light source adjusted in discrete steps

Method and apparatus for measuring properties of a flowing multiphase mixture uses a plurality of electrodes or plurality of microwave antennas to rapidly and repeatedly measure an electrical property of the multiphase mixture over a period of time. A computer processes the rapid and repeated measurements to determine a succession of values of permittivity and/or conductivity of a liquid phase of the multiphase mixture within the said period of time and further processes the succession of values of a permittivity and/or a conductivity of the liquid phase to determine at least one of a water-in-liquid-ratio and a liquid holdup of the multiphase mixture. A conduit for the multiphase flow possibly includes a Venturi and the processor takes pressure and differential pressure as further inputs to compute flow rates for each phase in the multiphase mixture.

Multiphase flowmeter

Properties of a multiphase mixture flow are measured in a blind-tee. The measured properties include the permittivity and/or the conductivity of the multiphase mixture flowing through a conduit. The permittivity and/or conductivity are measured at liquid-rich region(s) in a blind-tee section of the conduit and are used to determine properties of a liquid phase of the multiphase fluid flow, including one of the water conductivity, water in liquid ratio and water volume fraction. One or more electromagnetic sensors may be used in the blind-tee to measure the permittivity and/or conductivity. The sensors may be in contact with the multiphase flow or be disposed behind a dielectric window.

Measuring properties of a multiphase mixture flow

Methods and devices for measuring fluid properties include an electromagnetic sensor. The electromagnetic sensor includes a coaxial probe body having a first integral pressure barrier and a second integral pressure barrier formed from coaxial-feedthrough connector. The first integral pressure barrier and the second integral pressure barrier have a desired characteristic impedance.

A system and method for determining characteristics of a multiphase flow in a well/pipe are disclosed. The disclosed system and method use an optical immersion probe including a flow gap across which two or more types of radiation are transmitted in order to measure absorptions of two or more substances within the multiphase flow. Primarily, broadband ultraviolet (UV) and/or near infrared radiations (NIR) are utilized with the probe to gather absorption data at and/or around at least one of the water peaks and at and/or around one or more oil or oil-condensate peaks. This data may be utilized to calculate the water-cut of the multiphase flow over a wider range of gas volume fractions. Additionally, pressure ports having pressure sensors being located on the optical immersion probe for determining the impact pressures and flow rates of different phases of the multiphase flow may also be used.
