Described herein are a system and method for combining folders in a host operating system lacking a facility for performing the combining. A helper virtual machine (VM) is formed and runs a guest operating system with a facility for combining folders such as a union mount facility. The host operating system also runs a host/guest file-sharing server to share folders instead of copying them. The file-sharing server allows the VM to access host folders, perform the combination using the union mount facility, and then allows the host operating system to access the results as a shared union mount folder in the host. Any changes to the shared union mount folder in the host are automatically processed by the union mount facility in the VM and then reflected to a folder in the host operating system.

In some embodiments, a method maintains a list that is configured to store motion vectors from one or more blocks that have been previously processed in a frame. When a current block is in a first set of positions in the frame, the method resets the list by storing a motion vector with a horizontal component and a vertical component equal to zero in the list. In some embodiments, a method generates a first representation of a first relationship between bitrate and quality based on first features of a first portion of a video. Also, the method generates a second representation of a second relationship between bitrate and quality based on second features of a second portion of a video. The first list of bitrates is different from the second list of bitrates. In some embodiments, a method receives a file for transcoding. A timing requirement is associated with the transcoding of the file. The method generates a prediction of a timing estimation based on characteristics of the file and a set of target configurations. The timing estimation is analyzed for the set of target configurations and the timing requirement to determine a transcoding configuration of a transcoding system. The transcoding configuration of the transcoding system is output to configure the transcoding system to transcode the file. In some embodiments, a method selects a first template of pixels that is outside of a first block and a second template of pixels that is outside of the first block. A plurality of candidate points on the representation are selected. Then, the method selects a profile ladder from at least a portion of the plurality of candidate points. Each profile in the profile ladder is associated with a candidate point and the profile includes a corresponding bitrate and a quality measurement for the respective candidate point. A method includes transcoding a first block from a spatial region. The first block is associated with a first block tree pattern defining a structure of splitting a block into smaller blocks. A bit string of bits for the first block tree pattern is included in an encoded bitstream. The spatial region includes blocks and the location is based on the first block being in the spatial region. Embodiments of the invention include a computer-implemented method that uses a processor to access cryptographic-function constraints associated with an encrypted message. Based on a determination that the cryptographic-function constraints do not include mandatory cryptographic computing resource requirements, first resource-scaling operations are performed that include an analysis of cryptographic metrics associated with a processor. The cryptographic metrics include information associated with the encrypted message, along with performance measurements of cryptographic functions performed by the processor. The cryptographic-function constraints and results of the analysis of the cryptographic metrics are used to determine cryptographic processing requirements of the encrypted message; and match the cryptographic processing requirements to selected ones of a set of cryptographic computing resources to identify a customized set of cryptographic computing resources matched to cryptographic processing requirements of the encrypted message. The customized set of cryptographic computing resources is used to perform customized cryptographic functions on the encrypted message.
