Apparatus and techniques described herein include receiving information indicative of a first cylindrical shell representing a portion of an acoustic logging tool, receiving information indicative of a second cylindrical shell concentrically surrounding the first cylindrical shell, the second cylindrical shell representing a second portion of the acoustic logging tool, and the second cylindrical shell comprising a fluid metal model including a non-zero density, a non-zero compressional wave propagation velocity, and a shear wave propagation velocity of zero or about zero. Information is determined indicative of an acoustic dispersion comprising a slowness (or other information indicative of a propagation velocity) of a wave propagating along the acoustic logging tool using a model including the first and second cylindrical shells.

Apparatus and techniques for acoustic logging tool modeling

An acoustic logging tool includes a first acoustic transducer and a second acoustic transducer. At least a portion of the first transducer is parallel with the second transducer. The first and second acoustic transducers are configured to propagate an acoustic signal in the same direction. The first acoustic transducer is configured to generate an acoustic output having a different frequency than the second acoustic transducer.

An acoustic transducer, such as a bender bar, having ferroelectric actuation elements that are designed to optimize a predetermined deflection mode shape. The acoustic transducers may include one or more rounded modally shaped actuation elements or weighted actuation elements. Modal shaping of the actuation elements allows for specific targeting of modes which most efficiently radiate acoustic energy.

Apparatus and techniques are described, such as for obtaining information indicative of an acoustic characteristic of a formation, including using a transducer assembly, comprising a base plate, a first piezoelectric slab and a second piezoelectric slab. The base plate includes a first region extending axially in a first direction beyond the first and second piezoelectric slabs along a specified axis of the base plate and a second region extending axially in a second direction, opposite the first direction, beyond the first and second piezoelectric slabs. In various examples, a length of the first region along the specified axis is different than a length of the second region to provide an asymmetric configuration. In various examples, an anchoring element is mechanically coupled to the base plate at a location corresponding to a node location of a specified acoustic vibration mode.

Asymmetric bender bar transducer

A bender bar is presented. The bender bar includes at least two pairs of piezoelectric elements arranged on an inert element to adjust the response frequency of the bender bar. In some embodiments, the piezoelectric elements can be stacked on the inert element. In some embodiments, the piezoelectric elements are symmetrically arranged with respect to the bender bar such that a gap is formed between piezoelectric elements arranged on the inert element.

Method of controlled pulse driving of a stacked PZT bender bar for dipole acoustic radiation

In various embodiments, apparatus and methods are provided to perform acoustic imaging. An acoustic wave can be acquired at a detector, where the acoustic wave propagates from a target to the detector. The target may be acoustically illuminated to provide the acoustic wave. A signal from the detector in response to acquiring the acoustic wave can be processed in a model such that the processing implements a synthetic acoustic lens to generate an image of the target. A method for estimating a slowness of an earth formation, the method including: transmitting acoustic energy into the earth formation using an acoustic source; receiving the acoustic energy with an array of acoustic receivers, each acoustic receiver being configured to provide acoustic waveform data related to the received acoustic energy; transforming the acoustic waveform data into a frequency domain to provide frequency domain data; calculating a slowness-frequency coherence function using the frequency domain data; selecting slowness dispersion data from peaks of the slowness-frequency coherence function; fitting a curve to the slowness dispersion data; and estimating the slowness from the curve.
