A polyester prepolymer having increased reactivity when subjected to molecular weight buildup, such as in solid phase polymerization is prepared by an improved method which includes the steps of: reacting a dicarboxylic acid and a glycol in the presence of a transesterification catalyst to form a reaction mixture containing condensation oligomers; purifying the reaction mixture to remove substantially all of the reaction by-products and residual dicarboxylic acid, glycol and catalyst and to crystallize the condensation oligomers; and polycondensing the oligomers to form a molten prepolymer.

Method of making polyester prepolymers

An optical lens having an absorbance of less than about 0.1 for visible radiation of a wavelength in the range of from about 400 to about 600 nanometers is prepared from a crosslinkable acrylic composition. The composition consists essentially of an acrylic monomer and an acrylated urethane oligomer and exhibits a shrinkage upon curing of less than about 0.4%. The lens is prepared by introducing the crosslinkable composition into a lens-forming means and curing it until it is substantially crosslinked.

Phosphorescent screens which are useful for such purposes as intensifying screens for radiographs are comprised of a support bearing a layer of finely-divided particles of a phosphor dispersed in a cross-linked polymeric matrix formed by heat-curing of a coating composition comprising an unsaturated cross-linkable polymer, a polymerizable acrylic monomer, a thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer, and a heat-activatable polymerization initiator. The phosphor layer includes voids formed by evaporation of an evaporable component which is present in the coating composition from which such layer is formed.

Phosphorescent screens which are useful for such purposes as intensifying screens for radiographs are comprised of a support on which is coated a layer of finely-divided particles of a phosphor dispersed in a polymeric binder which has been cured by radiation. The phosphor layer includes voids formed by evaporation of a component which is present in the coating composition from which such layer is formed. Curing of the binder is carried out by use of suitable radiation, such as ultraviolet light or high energy ionizing radiation, and evaporation of the void forming component is carried out simultaneously with or subsequent to the radiation-curing of the binder.

Heat-sealable laminates useful as packaging materials, for example, for the packaging of photographic processing chemicals, are comprised of a metal foil, a thermoplastic polymeric film, and an interlayer formed by radiation curing of a composition comprising an acrylated epoxy resin. The laminates are manufactured by a process which comprises forming a sandwich comprising a layer of metal foil, a layer of thermoplastic polymer and an interlayer formed from a composition comprising an acrylated epoxy resin and irradiating the interlayer through the layer of thermoplastic polymer, for example by the use of ultraviolet radiation or high energy ionizing radiation, to cure the interlayer and bond it to both the layer of metal foil and the layer of thermoplastic polymer.

Method for manufacture of laminates which are useful as packaging

Heat-sealable laminates useful as packaging materials, for example, for the packaging of photographic processing chemicals, are comprised of a layer of metal foil, an outer heat-sealable layer of a radiation-cured and heat-fused polymeric composition, and a radiation-cured chemically-resistant polymeric interlayer between the foil and the outer layer. The laminates are manufactured by coating a metal foil with a radiation-curable composition that is capable of forming a chemically-resistant layer upon radiation curing, irradiating the coating to cure it, overcoating with a radiation-curable composition such as a vinyl plastisol that is capable of forming a heat-sealable layer upon radiation curing, irradiating the overcoat to cure it, and heating the laminate to fuse the overcoat layer.

Laminates useful as packaging materials and container having alkaline

Silver in compound form, usually silver sulfide, is precipitated from a solution containing other silver compounds, such as the complex silver thiosulfate compounds in photographic fix and bleach-fix solutions, by subjecting such a solution to radiation having an energy level of at least 4 electronvolts. The solution as received, or diluted only with water, is irradiated without adding other chemicals such as acid or alkaline compounds to change the normal pH. Ultraviolet light and high energy electrons are preferred. Penetration of the UV light or high energy electrons is improved by recycling a flowing stream and/or agitating solution.
