Baits useful against diabroticine mature and immature beetles contain (a) an insecticide and (b) a feeding stimulant containing a cucurbitacin in a gelatin binder.

Edible microcapsules and a process for recovering them are disclosed. The microcapsules include a shell material that has a thermal gelation temperature within the range from about 90.degree. F. to about 160.degree. F. The encapsulated material is a food additive which is protected from degradation and loss during the processing at relatively high temperatures of food products. The invention is particularly useful for additives to liquid-based foods such as soups, stews, and sauces.

Encapsulated additives

The present invention provides a film for application to a surface of a material capable of transmitting heat and/or light. The film comprises: a solvent comprising at least one volatile organic compound in an amount sufficient to maintain flowability of the film after exposure to air and for a time sufficient to apply the film to the surface, whereupon the solvent evaporates and dries the film; a polymer in an amount sufficient to reversibly bind the film to the surface; and, an ultraviolet absorbent material in an amount sufficient to reduce transmission of said energy through said material. The film may be applied and removed upon demand by the user.

Bait with hot melt binder

Baits useful for controlling lepidoptera populations is made with (a) a diet component for lepidoptera; (b) a toxicant; (c) a chemiluminescent, visual attractant and (d) an encapsulating agent that will allow moisture to permeate and form an external condensate of said diet and said toxicant. The diet, toxicant, and chemiluminescent visual attractant can be used in the same bait particle in a homogeneous or layered structure. Alternatively, the diet/toxicant may be used with a first encapsulating agent in a first bait particle with the chemiluminescent, visual attractant encapsulated in a second bait particle and distributed among the diet/toxicant bait particles.

Lepidoptera bait

Molten, water soluble polymer is used as a binder for agriculturally effective active ingredients in a water free encapsulation process. For finely divided solid active ingredients, a solvent for the binder can be used to increase the amount of bound active ingredient. For water insoluble active ingredients, the binder provides a method for rendering the active ingredient dispersable in water.

An encapsulated flavoring material contains an edible, oil-insoluble, water-soluble outer shell surrounding an edible, water-insoluble inner core that is liquid at a temperature of about 45.degree. C. and a volatile, oil-soluble flavoring material dissolved or dispersed in the inner core. In preferred embodiments, the encapsulated flavoring material has a diameter of from about 250 to about 710 microns, the outer shell is made from starch, the inner core is made from hydrogenated vegetable oil and the volatile, oil-soluble flavoring material is diacetyl.

Baits useful in the control of insect populations are made by a process that includes the steps of: (a) forming droplets of a homogeneous, substantially water-free mixture comprising: (i) 0.01-99 wt % of a feeding stimulant in the form of a finely divided particulate or liquid; (ii) 0.01-99 wt % of an insecticide; and (iii) a molten, polymeric binder composition that is solid at 25.degree. C. and exhibits a melting point within the range from about 35.degree. C. to about 65.degree. C.; and (b) making particulate baits from the droplets by cooling the droplets to a temperature below the melting point of the mixture. The absence of added water permits the use of active insecticidal ingredients that are generally temperature sensitive to the drying temperatures needed for commercial spray drying operations as well as those sensitive to the presence of water during extended storage and transport periods. The use of the present water-free process avoids hydrolysis of the active insecticide during those periods.

Manufacture of bait with hot melt binder

Agriculturally effective active ingredients are encapsulated in a 'salt sensitive' polymeric binder. Normally, the binder is water soluble and would release the active ingredient when wetted. In the presence of a hardening salt to which the polymer is sensitive, the polymer becomes water insoluble for so long as it is in chemical contact with the hardening salt. This sensitivity is used to control the circumstances and timing of the release of the encapsulated active ingredient.

Baits for diabroticine beetles are microspherical particles containing a homogeneous mixture of a toxicant for diabroticine beetles and a feeding stimulant in a binder containing a gelatin and a gum. Preferred formulations include carbaryl and buffalo gourd root powder.

Microcapsules are prepared by encapsulating a core material with a capsule shell wall containing glutaraldehyde crosslinked gelatin and at least one water soluble plasticizer that reduces the permeability of the crosslinked gelatin. Optionally, the capsule shell wall also contains a feeding deterrent that dissuades accidental ingestion of the microcapsule. Upon exposing the microcapsules to water, the plasticizer is removed making the shell wall permeable whereby the encapsulated core material is released. Materials such as insecticides, herbicides, plant growth regulating agents, and fungicides may be encapsulated and released at a controlled location, time and rate.

Controlled release microcapsules

A capsule and method for delivery for an active ingredient in the oral cavity that has a pH sensitive encapsulant shell and is associated with an adhesive. The pH sensitive shell dissolves at a pH in the oral cavity while the adhesive allows dissolution at the selected tissue.
