An apparatus and associated method for singulating a first work piece from a plurality of stacked work pieces, the plurality of stacked work pieces comprising a second work piece adjacent the first work piece. A stripping member is engageable against the second work piece. A lifting member is engageable with the first work piece and displaceable with respect to the stripping member between first and second positions. In the lifting member first position the first and second work pieces are stacked; in the lifting member second position the first and second work pieces are unstacked. After unstacking, a supporting member is moveable to engage the unstacked first work piece, selectively supporting the first work piece.

Singulator for stacked work pieces

A method for forming a disc stack assembly suitable for use in a disc drive. A number of discs are loaded onto a spindle motor hub and a disc clamp assembly is installed to secure the discs to the hub. The disc clamp assembly includes an annular retaining ring and a substantially planar, disc shaped clamp plate. The annular retaining ring is secured within an annular ring recess of the spindle motor hub and deforms the clamp plate so that the clamp plate applies an axially directed clamping force to the discs. The disc clamp includes an annular hat flange. The disc stack assembly is preferably balanced by selectively removing material from the hat flange or by attaching a balance weight to the hat flange.

Method for forming a disc stack assembly

A disc stack assembly for use in a disc drive. A spindle motor hub includes an annular ring recess. A disc is clamped to the spindle motor hub by a disc clamp assembly comprising a clamp plate and a retaining ring. The clamp plate includes an inner ring engagement portion, an outer disc engagement portion, and an initial, substantially planar shape in an undeformed state. The retaining ring is secured within the annular ring recess and maintains the clamp plate in a conically deformed state so that the inner ring engagement portion of the clamp plate applies a first moment force against the retaining ring while the outer disc engagement portion of the clamp plate applies a second moment force as an axially directed clamping force upon the disc.

A method for minimizing unbalance in the disc pack of a disc drive where the unbalance of the spindle motor is quantified and incorporated into the biasing assembly of the disc pack. In the assembly process, the discs are biased in a manner such that the unbalance of the spindle motor is considered.

Disc biasing scheme to minimize single plane unbalance for hard disc drives

An information handling system, such as a disc drive, including a base, a disc stack rotatably attached to the base, and an actuator assembly movably attached to the base. The disc stack assembly includes a spindle hub rotatably coupled to the disc drive. The spindle hub has an axis of rotation about which the disc stack assembly rotates. The spindle hub includes a cylindrical portion. The disc stack assembly also includes a clamp, a disc spacer, and a disc coupled to a spindle hub. The disc spacer has an opening therein dimensioned to receive the cylindrical portion of the spindle hub. The disc spacer is asymmetrical and positioned to counter balance a mass offset in the disc stack assembly. The asymmetrical disc spacer also includes a registration surface. The registration surface is on the outer perimeter of the disc spacer. The disc spacer has a center of mass offset from the axial centerline of the opening. The disc spacer is used to counter the center of mass offset of the disc stack assembly. Typically, balancing the disc stack assembly requires that the center of mass of the spacer is on one side of the axis of rotation of the hub and the center of mass of the disc stack assembly is on the other side of the axis of rotation of the hub. The flat surface of the asymmetrical disc spacer is positioned so the plane of the flat surface intersects a plane defined by the axial centerline of the disc stack assembly and a point associated with the mass offset of the disc assembly.
