Medical device assemblies capable of aspirating liquid into a syringe barrel or other medical devices while evacuating any air from the syringe are described. An exemplary medical device includes a syringe barrel, plunger rod and stopper assembly having an air permeable and liquid impermeable porous portion and structure for forming a vacuum within either the stopper or the plunger rod. Described is a medical device including a syringe barrel, plunger rod and stopper assembly having an air permeable and liquid impermeable porous portion and structure for forming a vacuum within chamber between the stopper and plunger rod wherein the plunger rod includes a sealing edge and is moveable relative to the stopper. Exemplary medical devices may include a vent for allowing air that permeates through the porous portion to escape to atmosphere. Methods for aspirating a syringe barrel with a liquid are also provided.

Medical device assemblies having a connection mechanism for securely connecting a hub to fluid storage containers in a luer slip relationship are described. An exemplary medical device includes a hub forming a cavity, a second indicating element disposed within the cavity that engages the hub. Additional features of the medical device include a second indicating element contoured to form a line contact with the hub. In a specific configuration, the hub includes a first indicating element attached to the hub and extending proximally into the cavity having a protrusion. In a more specific configuration, the medical device includes a fluid storage container that has an indication system for visually indicating optimal fluid-tight engagement of the hub and the fluid storage container.

A syringe assembly having a flexible and/or slidable flange is provided, wherein in a pre-use or packaged state, the flange is positioned substantially parallel to a barrel of the syringe assembly resulting in the syringe assembly having a smaller packaging footprint. The smaller packaging footprint allows for a reduced storage space of the syringe assembly. Upon removal from a packaging and/or the storage space, the flange can be slid and locked into place such that the flange extends in a perpendicular direction with respect to a longitudinal axis of the barrel of the syringe assembly to allow for a traditional operation of the syringe assembly.

A syringe assembly includes a syringe barrel having an exterior surface, an inside surface defining a chamber, an open proximal end, a distal end, and an outlet disposed adjacent the distal end in fluid communication with the chamber; and a plunger assembly disposed at least partially within the syringe barrel. The plunger assembly includes an elongated plunger rod and a plunger head. The elongated plunger rod is associated with the plunger head to move the plunger head within the chamber of the syringe barrel through an injection cycle. The plunger rod is adapted to move from a collapsed position extending alongside the exterior surface of the syringe barrel to an extended position engaging the plunger head to move the plunger head through the injection cycle.

A single-use auto-disable syringe device utilizes a locking element to prevent re-use of the syringe by locking the plunger rod with respect to the barrel upon completion of an injection stroke. The plunger rod includes a plurality of teeth comprising distally facing shoulders provided on a majority of the length of an elongate portion of the plunger rod.

A syringe assembly having a collapsible or pivotable plunger rod with magnification properties is provided. In a pre-use or packaged state, the plunger rod is positioned substantially parallel to a barrel of the syringe assembly resulting in the syringe assembly having a reduced length and a smaller packaging footprint. The smaller packaging footprint allows for reduced storage space of the syringe assembly. Upon removal from a packaging and/or a storage space, the plunger rod can be slid or pivoted toward a proximal end of the syringe barrel and locked into place such that the syringe assembly is ready for use. The plunger rod can be shaped to provide magnification to indicia of the syringe barrel and/or contents. Alternatively, a separate magnification member can be associated with the plunger rod and/or secured about the syringe barrel.

A single-use auto-disable syringe device of reduced size utilizes a locking element to prevent re-use of the syringe by locking the plunger rod with respect to the barrel upon completion of an injection stroke. The plunger rod includes a plurality of teeth comprising distally facing shoulders provided on a majority of the length of an elongate portion of the plunger rod and a breakable section configured to break upon the application of excessive axial or torsional force. The breakable section is preferably provided at a distal end of the plunger rod so that a proximal end of the locking element engages the syringe barrel and plunger rod at a position more proximal than the breakable section. In this way, the locking element resists some of the force that would otherwise be applied to the breakable section if the plunger rod were twisted. The plunger rod also includes an intermediate tooth provided on a distal-most tooth to prevent the user from repeatedly drawing in doses too small to activate the safety mechanism.
