An adiabatic coaxial cable connector includes a chassis, and a planar transmission line within the chassis and having first and second ends. The coaxial cable connector further includes a first coaxial-to-planar transition within the chassis and connected to the first end of the planar transmission line, and a second coaxial-to-planar transition within the chassis and connected to the second end of the planar transmission line.

Adiabatic coaxial cable coupling

An optical finger navigation (OFN) device for use in handheld portable devices is presented. The OFN device may include a light source, a sensor, a lens holder integrated with a light guide system and a molded lead frame. The lens holder may include a lens receiving region for receiving the lens, a light guide system for directing light emitted by the light source towards the navigation surface. The light guide system may include a slanted wall that may be coated with a light reflective material.

Optical finger navigation device

An optical finger navigation (OFN) device includes an OFN sensor module, a light source, and a vertical light guide. The OFN sensor module is coupled to a circuit substrate. The OFN sensor module generates a navigation signal in response to a movement detected at a navigation surface based on light reflected from a user's finger. The light source is also coupled to the circuit substrate. The light source generates light (which is separate from the light generated for the OFN sensor module). The vertical light guide is disposed to circumscribe a perimeter of the OFN sensor module. The vertical light guide receives the light from the light source and guides the light toward a light emission surface at a perimeter surface area circumscribing the navigation surface.

Backlighting for optical finger navigation

A user navigational apparatus. The user navigational apparatus includes a dial, a coding element, and an encoder. The coding element is coupled to a dial. The coding element includes a track of alternating reflective and non-reflective sections, each having a substantially oblique leading edge relative to a direction of movement of the coding element. The encoder includes an emitter and a detector. The emitter generates a light signal incident on the track of the coding element. The detector detects a reflected light signal which corresponds to a portion of the incident light signal that is reflected off of the reflective sections of the track. The detector also generates a channel signal corresponding to the reflected light signal.

Optical jog wheel with spiral coding element

A sensor head for sensing light modulated by a moveable member, such as a code wheel or code strip, in an optical encoder. The sensor head has at least one monitor optical sensor and a primary optical sensor positioned to receive light modulated by a modulation track on the moveable member. The monitor optical sensor provides a monitor signal that is compared in a signal comparator to the output from the primary optical sensor to detect light at the primary sensor.

A user navigational apparatus. The user navigational apparatus includes a code wheel and an encoder. The code wheel is coupled to a dial. The code wheel includes a track of alternating reflective and non-reflective sections. The optical reflective encoder includes an emitter and a detector. The emitter generates a light signal incident on the track of the code wheel. The detector detects a reflected light signal. The reflected light signal corresponds to a portion of the incident light signal that is reflected off of the reflective sections of the track. The detector also generates a channel signal corresponding to the reflected light signal. Embodiments of this type of user navigational apparatus achieve reduced thickness compared to conventional implementations of jog wheels.

An optical encoder. The encoder includes a coding element, an emitter, and a detector. The coding element has a track with a track pattern. The track pattern includes a plurality of optically distinguishable sections, which include a plurality of position sections and an index section. The emitter generates a light signal incident on the track of the coding element. The detector includes a combined position and index photodetector array. The combined position and index photodetector array includes a plurality of position photodetectors and an index photodetector. Embodiments of this type of optical encoder implement position and index sections in a single track on the coding element.

Encoder with a combined position and index track

An optical encoder includes a code strip having a first side, a second side, a first track comprising indicia thereon, and a second track comprising indicia thereon. The code strip is moveable along a displacement path with respect to the optical encoder. A light source positioned on the first side of the code strip directs light toward the code strip. A first detector element is positioned on the second side of the code strip and is generally aligned with the first track of the code strip. A second detector element is positioned on the second side of the code strip and is generally aligned with the second track of the code strip. The second detector element is also positioned so that the second detector element is located a spaced distance along the displacement path from the first detector element.

Optical encoder

An optical encoder. The optical encoder includes a coding element, an emitter, and a detector. The coding element has a track with a track pattern. The track pattern includes a plurality of optically distinguishable sections. The plurality of optically distinguishable sections includes a limit switch section. The emitter generates a light signal incident on the track of the coding element. The detector includes a limit switch photodetector positioned to detect the light signal from the emitter. The detector generates a limit switch output signal in response to the detected light signal above a limit switch threshold at the limit switch photodetector. Embodiments of this type of optical encoder implement limit switches into a single track on the coding element.

An optical encoder includes an optical encoder pattern of alternating light elements and dark elements, and an optical unit, including an optical emitter providing light to the encoder pattern, and an optical sensor including a photo-detector receiving the light from the optical encoder pattern and in response thereto outputting a sinusoidal signal indicating relative movement between the optical sensor and the encoder pattern. In one embodiment, the photo-detector has a diamond shape, a modified-diamond shape, or an hourglass shape. In another embodiment, at least one of the light elements and the dark elements of the optical encoder pattern has a diamond shape, a modified-diamond shape, or an hourglass shape.

Optical encoder with sinusoidal photodetector output signal

An Optical Projecting Encoder ('OPE') having an emitter module for transmitting emitted optical radiation through a mask to a moving object, and a detector module for receiving reflected optical radiation from the moving object. The reflected optical radiation from the moving object may include a predetermined image cast by the mask and a surface texture image from the moving object. The OPE may include a transmissive layer covering both the emitter module and the detector module, where the transmissive layer covering the emitter module collimates the optical radiation from the emitter module, and the transmissive layer covering the detector module concentrates the optical radiation reflected from the moving object to the detector module. The detector module may include an optical navigation sensor that continuously acquires and compares predetermined images cast by the mask and surface texture images from the moving object.

Optical projection encoder with patterned mask

An encoder having a code pattern on a carrier and an emitter detector module is disclosed. The code pattern includes alternating reflective and opaque regions on a carrier that includes a planar surface. The emitter-detector module includes a light source that generates light and directs a portion of the generated light at the first side of the carrier and a first detector that detects light reflected from one of the reflective regions. The reflective regions include a three-dimensional element for directing light from the light source onto the first detector. The element has a surface that is inclined at an oblique angle with respect to the planar surface. The code pattern moves with respect to the emitter-detector module. The three-dimensional element can include a reflective imaging element that images the light source onto a surface of the first detector.
