Isolators and methods for operating the same are described for opto-isolators with improved common mode transient immunity (CMTI). In some embodiments, a pair of photodetectors are provided in the opto-isolator and configured to generate photocurrents of opposite signs or directions in response to a light signal. Photocurrents from the pair of photodetectors are combined in a differential manner to represent data transmitted in a light signal, while common mode transient noise at the two photodetectors is attenuated or eliminated.

Differential opto isolator

An microelectromechanical switch uses electrostatic attraction to draw a beam toward a contact and electromagnetic repulsion to disengage and repel the beam from the contact. The electrostatic attraction is generated by a gate electrode. The electromagnetic repulsion is generated between the beam and a magnetic coil positioned on the same side of the beam as the contact. The magnetic coil produces a magnetic field, which induces a current in the beam that repels the magnetic coil. The gate electrode and the magnetic coil may be co-planar or in different planes. A circuit may also operate a coil-shaped structure act as the gate electrode and the magnetic coil, depending on the configuration.

Electromagnetically actuated microelectromechanical switch

Radio frequency (RF) isolators are described, coupling circuit domains operating at different voltages. The RF isolator may include a transmitter which emits a directional signal toward a receiver. Layers of materials having different dielectric constants may be arranged to confine the emission along a path to the receiver. The emitter may be an antenna having an aperture facing the receiver.

Radio frequency isolator

An inductive device may include a pair of half-shell magnetically-conductive housings joined together and defining an enclosed cavity between them. The inductive device may also include primary and secondary windings provided spatially within the cavity providing magnetic coupling between them. The windings may be electrically insulated from each other and terminals of the primary and secondary windings may traverse to an exterior of the inductive device.

Miniature planar transformer

Magnetic devices, and associated methods of manufacture, using flex circuits. Conductive flex circuit traces, or combinations of such traces with conductive printed circuit board or other substrate traces, form windings around toroidal ferromagnetic cores. Bending the flex circuit into a partial loop or a full loop forms partial or full windings respectively. Bonding or flow soldering electrically connects the windings together and to a printed circuit board or other substrate. The methods yield transformers with high conversion efficiency, are compatible with conventional printed circuit boards and readily available high-volume assembly equipment, and avoid the higher cost of manually made windings.

Magnetic devices and methods for manufacture using flex circuits

A MEMS apparatus has a substrate, an input node, an output node, and a MEMS switch between the input node and the output node. The switch selectively connects the input node and the output node, which are electrically isolated when the switch is open. The apparatus also has an input doped region in the substrate and an output doped region in the substrate. The input doped region and output doped region are electrically isolated through the substrate&#x2014;i.e., the resistance between them inhibits non-negligible current flows between the two doped regions. The input doped region forms an input capacitance with the input node, while the output doped region forms an output capacitance with the output node.

MEMS device with constant capacitance

A MEMS switch has a base formed from a substrate with a top surface and an insulator layer formed on at least a portion of the top surface. Bonding material secures a cap to the base to form an interior chamber. The cap effectively forms an exterior region of the base that is exterior to the interior chamber. The MEMS switch also has a movable member (in the interior chamber) having a member contact portion, an internal contact (also in the interior chamber), and an exterior contact at the exterior region of the base. The contact portion of the movable member is configured to alternatively contact the interior contact. A conductor at least partially within the insulator layer electrically connects the interior contact and the exterior contact. The conductor is spaced from and electrically isolated from the bonding material securing the cap to the base.
