In general, the invention is directed to a technique for percutaneously introducing a stimulation lead into a target stimulation site via the epidural region proximate the spine of a patient. The process of introducing the stimulation lead may include the use of a hollow stimulation lead introducer, which comprises an elongated sheath and an elongated dilator. The dilator fits within the sheath and serves to widen a path through the epidural region for the introduction of a stimulation lead. At least a portion of the stimulation lead introducer has an oblong cross-section, allowing passage of stimulation leads such as paddle leads. The stimulation lead introducer may enter the epidural region proximate a spine of a patient via a guidewire. The stimulation lead introducer provides a path through the epidural region of a patient to a target stimulation site. A stimulation lead may travel through the path to reach the target stimulation site where it may provide therapy to the patient.

This disclosure describes a kit to facilitate implantation of therapy elements into a patient, and techniques for percutaneously inserting therapy elements into a patient. In particular, embodiments of the invention are directed to techniques for percutaneously inserting two or more therapy elements into a patient via a single needle. In one embodiment, the invention is directed to a kit to facilitate implantation of therapy elements into a patient. The kit comprises a needle defining a lumen a first therapy element sized to pass through the lumen, and a second therapy element sized to pass through the lumen. The lumen is sized to receive both of the first and second therapy elements simultaneously. The first and second therapy elements are separate and not attached to one another such that distal ends of the first and second therapy elements can be positioned to provide therapy in distinct locations of the patient.

Kit for implantation of therapy elements

A medical lead for electrical stimulation or sensing. The medical lead has a generally flat paddle on the distal end of the lead body. An electrode array is provided on the paddle. The electrode array having directional electrical field properties relative to the first and major surfaces of the paddle (e.g., the electrodes are exposed through only one of the major surfaces). An orientation marker for determining orientation of the lead, with the orientation marking including fluoroscopically viewable material.

A method of manufacturing a medical lead comprising a lead body with at least one conductor and an elongate paddle having an electrode array. A first section is formed having a first butt bond by butt bonding an end of a first substantially flat and elongate member to an end a second substantially flat and elongate member. A second section is formed having a second butt bond by butt bonding an end of a third substantially flat and elongate member to an end a fourth substantially flat and elongate member. The first section is laminated to the second section to form the elongate paddle of the medical lead with the first butt bond longitudinally offset from the second butt bond. A medical lead made by exemplary embodiments of the method is also described.
