The invention provides an apparatus and method for conducting chemical or biochemical reactions on a solid surface within an enclosed chamber. The invention may be used in conducting hybridization reactions, as of biopolymers such as DNA, RNA, oligonucleotides, peptides, polypeptides, proteins, antibodies, and the like. In another aspect, the invention provides an improved method for mixing a thin film of solution, as in a hybridization chamber. The invention further provides a kit for carrying out the methods of the invention.

Low surface energy functionalized surfaces on solid supports are provided by treating a solid support having hydrophilic moieties on its surface with a derivatizing composition containing a mixture of silanes. A first silane provides the desired reduction in surface energy, while the second silane enables functionalization with molecular moieties of interest, such as small molecules, initial monomers to be used in the solid phase synthesis of oligomers, or intact oligomers. Molecular moieties of interest may be attached through cleavable sites. Derivatizing compositions for carrying out the surface functionalization process are provided as well.

A method and apparatus for reducing the crosstalk between two or more dye channels in a multiple frequency laser induced fluorescence scanner in which two laser beams and associated optics are employed for focusing the two laser beams on a plurality of spatially separated spots, and for collecting and measuring the resulting emission from the sample labeled with at least two dyes. Crosstalk of the dye emission is minimized as the separated spots provide for a more nearly diagonal transformation matrix between signal channels and dye channels.

A method and apparatus for fabricating replicate arrays of nucleic acid molecules include the preparation of the molecules and the application the molecules onto a substrate in an ordered array. The apparatus comprises a synthesis unit and a plurality of outlets. The synthesis unit comprises a plurality of synthesis chambers that are spatially arranged relative to each other to provide an array suitable for conducting parallel nucleic acid syntheses. The chambers are suitable for containing discrete compositions of nucleic acid molecules. Each outlet of the plurality of outlets communicates with a single synthesis chamber. The plurality of outlets are configured such that nucleic acid molecules can be removed from the chambers through the outlet and deposited onto the substrate in an ordered array that corresponds to the spatial arrangement of the synthesis chambers.
