There is disclosed a gaseous laser device comprising an envelope, a cathode, a lasing gaseous volume, and an anode, the envelope being comprised of at least two opposing substrates bonded together; the cathode, lasing gaseous volume, and anode being positioned within different cavities of at least one substrate such that the cathode, lasing gaseous volume, and anode are commonly confined within the envelope in an integrally connecting relationship.

There is disclosed a gaseous laser device with a novel damage-resistant cathode geometry. The device comprises an envelope, a cathode volume having at least one wall, an electrically conductive cathode within the cathode volume, a lasing gaseous volume, and an anode. The cathode comprises an electrically conductive material supported by at least one cathode wall with at least one cathode wall edge being vulnerable to gas discharge deterioration. The gas discharge erosion of at least a portion of the vulnerable cathode edge is substantially prevented by the positioning of a juxtaposed protective cover plate over the cathode edge.

There is disclosed a method of permanently attaching metallic spacers in gaseous discharge display panels by ultrasonically bonding said spacers between the glass substrates thereof to thin film metal tabs located between the electrodes. Such a method prevents any subsequent movement of the spacers after attachment and makes the spacers substantially invisible to the naked eye. The article so bonded is also an integral part of this invention.

Gas laser with sputter-resistant cathode

Stainless steel discs with a Brinell hardness of about 150 to 240 provide excellent invisible spacers for maintaining proper gas chamber gaps in electro-optical display devices. These spacers approximately about 8 to 20 mils in diameter and about 3 to 7 mils thick improve spacing uniformity in the viewing area and minimize firing site or cell wipe-out.

The glass tubulation of a gaseous discharge display device or similar device can be advantageously sealed to a glass substrate by using a preformed vitreous or devitrifiable solder glass annular member such as a washer which is placed over the tubulation and subjected to the normal solder glass sealing cycle to make the final seal.

Method of sealing tubulation with preformed solder glass

A low melting, transparent glass spacer rod system is disclosed which will soften and seal the two glass substrates in the center of a gaseous discharge panel at or below the temperature used to seal the periphery but above the gas processing temperature thus relieving the stresses developed at the edge seal when the gas within the panel expands at high altitudes. High melting rods near the seal periphery provide the proper gap spacing between substrates.
