A removable filter for separating and filtering slurry liquid from solid particles includes one or more filter sections connected by a filtrate conduit. Each section comprises a plurality of vertical, hollow, sintered metal filter elements horizontally arranged across a manifold connected to a hollow filtrate conduit. The sections are vertically stacked and connected by the conduit(s) to form the filter which is removably secured in the slurry by means which permit it to be removed vertically up and out of the top of the reactor. This filter has a high surface area to volume ratio and is useful for removing the liquid hydrocarbon products from a slurry hydrocarbon synthesis reactor and can easily be replaced without having to drain out the slurry.

A gas conversion process including catalytic hydrocarbon synthesis from a synthesis gas comprising a mixture of H.sub.2 and CO, produces hydrogen from the synthesis gas and upgrades synthesized hydrocarbons by one or more hydroconversion operations which utilize this hydrogen. The hydroconversion also produces a hydrogen rich tail gas which is used in the process for at least one of (i) hydrocarbon synthesis catalyst rejuvenation, (ii) the hydrocarbon synthesis, and (iii) hydrogen production. In one embodiment the tail gas is used to hydrodesulfurize sulfur-containing hydrocarbon liquids recovered from the natural gas used to form the synthesis gas. The hydrogen production is accomplished by physical separation, such as PSA, with or without chemical means such as a water gas shift reaction.

Gas conversion using hydrogen from syngas gas and hydroconversion tail

A gas conversion process comprising synthesis gas production, hydrocarbon synthesis and hydrogen production from the synthesis gas, also includes hydrodesulfurizing sulfur-containing hydrocarbon liquids separated from a mixture of natural gas and the liquids produced from a gas well. Hydrogen produced from the synthesis gas is used for the hydrodesulfurization, to remove at least a portion of the sulfur as H.sub.2 S and form desulfurized hydrocarbon liquid. The hydrogen is produced from the synthesis gas by one or more of (i) physical separation means such as pressure swing adsorption and (ii) chemical means such as a water gas shift reactor. The synthesized hydrocarbons are upgraded by hydroconversion. A portion of the hydrogen produced from the synthesis gas may also be used for at least one of (i) hydrocarbon synthesis catalyst rejuvenation and the hydroconversion.

Gas conversion using hydrogen produced from syngas for removing sulfur

A gas conversion process in which both hydrocarbons and hydrogen are produced from a synthesis gas feed which comprises a mixture of H.sub.2 and CO, uses hydrogen from a portion of the feed for one or more of (i) hydrocarbon synthesis catalyst rejuvenation and (ii) hydroconversion upgrading of at least a portion of the synthesized hydrocarbons. Hydrogen is produced from a slipstream of the synthesis gas fed into the hydrocarbon synthesis reactor by one or more of (i) physical separation means such as pressure swing adsorption and (ii) chemical means such as a water gas shift reactor. If a shift reactor is used due to insufficient capacity of the synthesis gas generator, physical separation means such as pressure swing adsorption will still be used to separate a pure stream of hydrogen from the shift reactor gas effluent.

Gas conversion using synthesis gas produced hydrogen for catalyst

Hydrogen containing tail gas from a hydrocarbon synthesis reactor is used as a hydrogen containing catalyst rejuvenating gas. If CO is present, the CO content, is less than 10 mole % of the gas and the H.sub.2 to CO mole ratio is greater than 3:1. At least a portion of the water and liquid hydrocarbons are removed from the tail gas, before it is used to rejuvenate the reversibly deactivated catalyst.

Hydrocarbon synthesis using reactor tail gas for catalyst rejuvenation

A slurry hydrocarbon synthesis process employs a slurry filtration vessel external of the slurry reactor. Slurry from the reactor is passed through one or more gas and solids disengaging zones, one or more of which may be present in the reactor and vessel, to reduce the gas and solids content of the slurry before it contacts the filter in the vessel. The filter separates the slurry hydrocarbon liquid from the gas and solids as a filtrate which is sent to upgrading. Valves in gas and fluid conduits enable the filtration vessel to be isolated from the reactor for maintenance, to replace filters and to aid in controlling slurry flow through the vessel. A hydrogen rich gas may be injected into the filtration vessel to prevent catalyst deactivation. Slurry is hydraulically circulated between the reactor and vessel due to density differences while the reactor is operating.

Slurry hydrocarbon synthesis with external product filtration

In an integrated coking and gasification process wherein a stream of fluidized solids is passed from a fluidized bed coking zone to a second fluidized bed and wherein entrained solid fines are recovered by a scrubbing process and wherein the resulting solids-liquid slurry is stripped with a stripping gas to remove acidic gases, at least a portion of the stripping gas comprises a gas comprising hydrogen, nitrogen and methane separated from the coker products.

In an integrated fluid coking and gasification process wherein a stream of fluidized solids is passed from a fluidized bed coking zone to a second fluidized bed and wherein entrained solid fines are recovered by a wet scrubbing process and wherein the resulting solids-liquid slurry is stripped to remove acidic gases, the stripped vapors of the stripping zone are sent to the gas cleanup stage of the gasification product gas. The improved stripping integration is particularly useful in the combination coal liquefaction process, fluid coking of bottoms of the coal liquefaction zone and gasification of the product coke.
