A process is described for the production of bonded abrasive products in which the abrasive particles are filamentary alumina particles with a substantially uniform cross-section and an aspect ratio of at least about 1:1.

Bonded abrasive grinding tools with more cost effective grinding performance than those known in the prior art for grinding certain types of hard metals may be made by combining in the tool both grits of conventional superabrasives and grits of aluminous abrasive characterized by a microstructure that predominantly comprises tightly packed, very fine crystals of alpha alumina or of an aluminum spinel such as magnesium aluminate. The predominant crystallites in the best type of aluminous abrasive have maximum dimensions of no more than about 0.3 micron and generally show little or no regular faceting at about 5,000 magnification and are approximately equiaxed, with no higher aspect ratio than 2, usually less than 1.5.

An abrasive product and process is disclosed, for grinding titanium metal and its alloy. The product used to grind the titanium consists of a grinding wheel wherein the abrasive grains are aggregates of silicon carbide particles bonded together with a refractory bond such as silicon oxynitride or a silicate based material.

Bonding of sintered sol-gel aluminous abrasive grits, comprising sub-micron sized alpha alumina crystals, in vitrified (ceramic) wheels results in abrasive performance superior to premium grade fused alumina in grinding tool-steels. Viscosity of the bond and/or temperature of firing must be controlled to avoid reaction between the bond and the abrasive.

A segmental grinding wheel includes abutting, interfitting and interchangeable composite abrading segments clamped to a rotary chuck, each of which comprises a preformed bonded abrasive segment of simple shape with at least a portion of each side, except a working face thereof, encased in a relatively non-abrasive precision molded plastic shell of precise dimensions, more complex and perfect interfitting configuration. The shell is preferably made of material that is or contains a grinding aid, prevents coolant swarf from filling the pores of the abrasive segment and reinforces the abrasive segment.
