An expandable, hardening seal for downhole use in a wellbore includes a heat-hardening material and a heat-stable material. The heat-hardening material has a stiffness that increases after exposure to a downhole temperature and the heat-stable material has a stiffness that does not increase or increases to a lesser degree than that the heat-hardening material at the downhole temperature.

A well tool can include a body and at least one barrier element. The barrier element can include a pyrolytically degradable material that is positionable to block a flow of fluid across the body within a wellbore and to degrade by pyrolysis over time within the wellbore.

At least a portion of a wellbore region can be sealed using a packer that includes a dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) polymeric resin. The resin can be molded onto a tubular. The DCPD packer can swell in response to being exposed to hydrocarbon fluid at a temperature greater than the glass transition temperature of the DCPD resin to seal an annular region between the tubular and the wall of the well or casing string.

A wellbore isolation device includes a tubular body having an inner bore formed longitudinally therethrough. A plurality of centralizing arms is radially extendible from the tubular body. At least one slip is radially extendible from the tubular body. A sealing assembly that is radially extendible from the tubular body is also included and disposed between the centralizing arms and the slip. The sealing assembly includes a radially extendible elastomeric sealing surface and an anti-extrusion device having at least two support members coupled to opposite longitudinal ends of the elastomeric sealing surface. An equalizing port is also included which is disposed in the tubular body and permits, when opened, fluidic communication between external the tubular body and the inner bore thereby equalizing the pressure between external the tubular body and the inner bore.

A well seal tool includes a base tubing and a seal element carried on an exterior of the base tubing. The seal element includes a polymer changeable between a compressed state and a sealing state. The seal element has a first stiffness in response to a first strain rate of the polymer and a second, substantially higher stiffness in response to a second, higher strain rate of the polymer.

A well system includes a drop plug element and an internal plug seat in an internal flow path of a well tubing. At least one of the plug seat or the drop plug element includes a polymer that is deformable, having a first stiffness when subjected to a first strain rate, to allow the drop plug element to pass through the plug seat. The polymer resists deformation, having a second, higher stiffness when subjected to a second, higher strain rate, to resist allowing the plug element to pass through the plug seat and to seal the plug element and plug seat.

A wellbore cementing plug includes a plug element including a polymer. The polymer is deformable at a first stiffness when subjected to a first strain rate to allow the plug element to pass through a wellbore while sealing against passage of cement past the plug element. The polymer resists deformation at a second, higher stiffness when subjected to a second, higher strain rate to resist allowing the plug element to pass through the wellbore while sealing against passage of cement past the plug element.
