A cylindrical portion of the tool or workpiece is rotatably supported by two pairs of spherical rollers rotatably carried by two pairs of holders mounted on first and second upright supports secured to a bed. The second support is adjustable to change the spacing between the supports. The holders have screw threads for adjusting the spacing between the rollers. Alternatively, separate feed screws are provided for the holders. A drive belt is looped around the workpiece and around a drive pulley rotatably mounted on a movable carriage biased by a spring to tighten the belt. A knob is provided to rotate the drive pulley. The flights of the belt are pinched toward each other by a pair of guide pulleys and by a pair of rollers adjacent the drive pulley, whereby the upper loop of the belt is kept open and close to the location of the workpiece when it is removed. The carriage may be latched in a belt-loosening position by a swingable latching arm. Optionally, the workpiece may be rotatably supported by two pairs of blades having inclined edges in a V-shaped formation. The blades have smoothly rounded edges for engaging the workpiece with point contacts.

Successively finished drills or other tools are ejected from a chuck into successive angularly spaced openings in a rotary turret, mounted on a carriage with a power device for reciprocating the turret into and out of an unloading position. A ratchet wheel on the turret is indexed through successive detented positions by engagement of the ratchet wheel with a pawl, as an incident to the reciprocating movement. The pawl is mounted on a stationary pivot and is biased into the path of the reciprocating ratchet wheel.

Tool unloading mechanism for automatic tool grinding machine

The disclosed machine comprises holding means for holding a drill or other similar tool to be ground, first and second drive means for producing translatory movement of the holding means along rectangularly related directions, third drive means for producing the rotation of the holding means, a plurality of grinding units including grinding motors and wheels for grinding the tool, respective additional drive means for causing feeding movement of the grinding motors to bring the wheels into grinding engagement with the tool, swivel means for swiveling the holding means to present the tool to the respective grinding units, a keyboard for entering numerical dimensional values and parameters for controlling the drive means, a TV tube for displaying the values and parameters, a memory for storing the values and parameters, means for bringing up a series of questionnaire pages on the TV tube to prompt the operator to enter all of the dimensional values and parameters to program the machine, the questionnaires having a series of questions calling for values and parameters, the values and parameters being displayed on the TV tube opposite the respective questions when the values and parameters are entered by the operator, and means for putting the machine through a series of operations utilizing the values and parameters. The machine includes an unloader having a rotary turret with angularly spaced openings for receiving finished drills, means for reciprocating the turret into and out of an unloading position, a ratchet wheel on the turret, and a pawl for indexing the ratchet wheel when the turret is moved out of the unloading position.

Automatic tool grinding machine with computerized control

A grinding machine with a high production rate for pre-pointing drill bodies and the like in automatic duty cycles wherein separate grinding heads and a chuck head are respectively shiftable to and from a working position to grind both ends of the drill body simultaneously. The chuck head includes a special through-feeding rotary chuck which is journalled at its periphery and through which the work pieces are loaded and unloaded sequentially and unidirectionally by a fast-acting loading plunger advancing rapidly in an initial portion of its loading stroke, with completion at a slowed rate for accurate lodgement of the drill bodies with both ends precisely positioned for engagement by the grinding wheels.

Drill pre-pointing machine

An automatic grinding machine adapted to cut and relieve spiral drill flutes and perform analogous form-relieving operations requiring helical advance of the work, wherein a linearly-moving carriage travels a rotary spindle and its work chuck relative to a grinding wheel in programmed duty cycles under control of logic circuitry with optional manual override control. Separate electric motors for the carriage and spindle are activated at adjustable speed ratios by digitally set binary drive pulses enabling instant change of helix angle or lead ratios and other working parameters by adjustment of digital switches at a simple control panel. A reversible tool head affords automatic cross-cutting capabilities; and a system of pulse-controlled indexing of the work is provided to increase the production rate of the machine by a method which effects the indexing as a function of the otherwise idle return travel of the carriage for restarting in successive work excursions.

Automatic flute grinding machine

A hopper payout for various coin denominations is disclosed having a hopper, a rotary pin wheel, removably secured shelf wheel, and delivery opening in which the pin wheel is suspended for rotation by means of rollers oriented at the periphery of the wheel on spaced centers. The shelf wheel is removable and replaceable with differing diameter shelf wheels to accommodate varying denominations of coins. A centrally disposed agitator is similarly removable and interchangeable. The knife which removes coins from the shelf wheel is pivotally mounted to accommodate varying diameters of the varying coin dimensions. A uniformly widening coin gutter is provided to reduce the tendency of the coins to jam and shingle, irrespective of denomination and size. In order to adjustably accommodate the varying weights of coins within the hopper to divert the flow of coins into the permanent coin reservoir, the hopper is pivotally secured to the frame, and a yieldable means having a preselected resiliency secures the same against pivoting. Thus an empirical determination of the number of coins to be held in the hopper before bypassing to the permanent collection member can be made by service personnel in the field.
