Improved method and apparatus for hand-held portable illumination. A flashlight and corresponding method are described. The flashlight includes a housing, a plurality of LEDs, and an electrical circuit that selectively applies power from the DC voltage source to the LED units, wherein the flashlight is suitable for handheld portable operation by a user. In one embodiment, the first electrical circuit further includes a control circuit for maintaining a predetermined light output level of the LED units as a charge on a battery varies. In another embodiment, the control circuit maintains an average predetermined light output level of the LED units as the charge on the battery cell varies by changing a pulse width or frequency as the charge on the battery cell varies to maintain a given average light output. Another aspect provides an illumination source that includes a light-emitting diode (LED) housing including one or more LEDs, and a control circuit that selectively applies power from a source of electric power to the LEDs, the control circuit substantially maintaining a light output characteristic of the LEDs as a voltage of the voltage source varies over a range that would otherwise vary the light output characteristic. Manufacturing lines include inspection systems for monitoring the quality of parts produced. Manufacturing lines for making semiconductor devices generally inspect each fabricated part. The information obtained is used to fix manufacturing problems in the semiconductor fab plant. A machine-vision system for inspecting devices includes a light source for propagating light to the device and an image detector that receives light from the device. Also included is a light sensor assembly for receiving a portion of the light from the light source. The light sensor assembly produces an output signal responsive to the intensity of the light received at the light sensor assembly. A controller controls the amount of light received by the image detector to a desired intensity range in response to the output from the light sensor. The image detector may include an array of imaging pixels. The imaging system may also include a memory device which stores correction values for at least one of the pixels in the array of imaging pixels. To minimize or control thermal drift of signals output from an array of imaging pixels, the machine-vision system may also include a cooling element attached to the imaging device. The light source for propagating light to the device may be strobed. The image detector that receives light from the device remains in a fixed position with respect to the strobed light source. A translation element moves the strobed light source and image detector with respect to the device. The strobed light may be alternated between a first and second level.

An illumination method and apparatus for machine-vision systems, including a ring-light source (e.g., LEDs arranged in one or more circular rows), and a reflective-ring focusing element. The illumination source exhibits multi-directional ring-illumination properties which are useful for illumination of small components (which are being inspected or measured) without unwanted shadows. One embodiment provides a darkfield illumination system. One embodiment of the present invention uses a strobed (or pulsed) power supply to drive the LEDs. Yet another embodiment of the present invention uses a xenon strobe ring-light source and a backplane slit in place of the row of LEDs In one such xenon strobe embodiment, a color filter, is also placed in series with the light path in order to obtain a monochromatic light. While xenon flashtube light sources tend to exhibit a five percent (5%) flash-to-flash variation in intensity which makes accurate measurements of certain characteristics difficult, they are useful in certain cases where intense white, or especially ultraviolet, light is desired. Strobed LEDs provide very little flash-to-flash variation in intensity. The compact ring-light generator has little, if any, shadowing. The present invention also provides an inexpensive apparatus and method for changing the light-source-to-optical-axis angle.

Method and apparatus for L.E.D. illumination

A fiber bundle combiner and LED illumination system and method. In one embodiment, an illumination fixture includes a plurality of light-emitting diode (LED) light sources, and a fiber-optic assembly having a common first bundle end and plurality of second ends. Each of the second ends is optically coupled to receive light from an LED. Ths fibers transmit light from the second ends to the common first end such that light from the LEDs is output at the first end. Optionally, pipe cells couple the light, wherein each LED is associated with a respective pipe cell that serves to focus light from the LED into one or more of the fibers. In one embodiment, each of the pipe cells includes a concave substantially spherical focussing reflective surface. Yet another aspect provides a method for making an LED and fiber-optic combiner assembly comprising: providing pipe cells, each pipe cell having an opening having a constriction for locating a fiber at a desired location within the pipe cell; inserting into each of the pipe cells one more more optical fibers; severing each of the optical fibers to form end at a desired position relative to the pipe cells; and assembling the plurality of pipe cells to a corresponding plurality of LEDs. In one embodiment, the severing operation includes melting the fibers to form a ball end on each fiber. In another embodiment, the assembling operation includes filling each of the pipe cells with liquid light-transmitting plastic.
