An enhanced user experience is disclosed herein that provides for gesture-based configuring of pivot tables. In various implementations, a pivot table includes query areas associated with fields of a data table being summarized by the pivot table. Gestures made with respect to an area of the pivot table drive changes in the association of the fields of the data table with the query areas of the pivot table. As user input is received with respect to an area of the pivot table, relevant fields are identified, and new associations are made between the query areas and the fields. The pivot table may then be updated accordingly based on the new associations.

A layout engine generates a visual layout tree for a visual description tree of a document whose content is to be rendered in one or more display areas. A visual description tree describes the content of a document along with formatting and logical arrangement the content. During a synchronous collaboration session, a document is displayed at a user's computing device. As changes to the document are received at the user's computing device, a change list is updated and the modified document is displayed. Any changes from the user are broadcast to other participants. For asynchronous collaboration during the session, a user-specific fork is created in the change list to contain private changes for the user. For each private change from the user, the groupware updates the change list in the user-specific fork with the private change, which is not broadcast to the other participants for reconciliation.

A method and system for transforming documents from different domains into a common representation for viewing and editing is provided. The system prepares the domain-specific document for visual representation by performing a series of transformations in a pipeline that convert the document from its domain-specific input state to a series of intermediate languages. A method and system for organizing nodes within a program tree. The system allows various child node categories to be defined for node types of a program tree. When a child node is added to a parent node, the system identifies the category of the child node. The system then instantiates a category data structure for the identified category. The system stores a reference to the instantiated category data structure in the parent node and stores a reference to the child node in the instantiated category data structure.
