This invention relates to the use of acyclic substituted pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine nucleoside analogs in the treatment of viral infections. Such substituted compounds retain antiviral properties present in their parent compounds, yet exhibit significantly decreased levels of cytotoxicity, thereby having therapeutic potential as antiviral agents.

A process for relieving pain and novel topical compositions for transdermal delivery of a narcotic analgesic comprising the application to mammalian skin of an effective amount of a compound of the formula: ##STR1## or a pharmacologically acceptable acid addition salt thereof, where R is --CH.sub.2, ##STR2## or --H and R' and R' are C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 hydrocarbons or --H, in association with a topical pharmaceutical carrier selected from the group consisting of ointments, lotions, pastes, jellies, gels, creams, sprays, aerosols and the like.

Transdermal delivery of the narcotic analgesics etorphine and analogs

This invention relates to the use of various 2-acetylpyridine thiosemicarbazones which are substituted on the 4-nitrogen atom in the treatment of viral infections. Also disclosed are several synthetic procedures used to prepare the thiosemicarbazones.
