A multi-color, multi-pulse laser target designator is disclosed in which the target is illuminated with pulses of preselected colors and interpulse spacings so as to uniquely identify the target. Inter-pulse spacing may be varied down to an arbitarily small spacing by virtue of the use of pulses of differing colors, thereby increasing countermeasure resistance due to the difficulty of a target detecting and duplicating inter-pulse spacing. Pulse elongation is provided in one embodiment to provide prolonged illumination of the target so as to permit increased homing accuracy for optically guided weapons.

Multi-color, multi-pulse laser

A multi-color, multi-pulse laser operating at a number of wavelengths is provided with a like number of cavities to produce a like number of output pulses from a single pumping pulse. The spacing between the pulses is easily controlled by controlling the timing of Q-switches, each in a different cavity, so that information is imparted by the pulse spacing. In a two color embodiment, a beam splitting device is positioned along the longitudinal axis of the laser medium to produce two beams which are directed into different cavity resonators, each tuned to a different wavelength. Reflecting surfaces positioned at the end of each cavity redirect each beam back to the beam splitting device where the beams are spatially recombined and subsequently two pulses, one of one color and the other of the second color, are sequentially coupled out of the laser system. The colors may be sufficiently close in wavelength such that detection does not discriminate against the two colors, and a double pulse output is obtained at the detector. In this manner, the laser system produces two output pulses from a single laser medium and a single pumping pulse. The pulse width of each of the pulses may also be controlled by pulse stretching means in one or more of the optical paths.

There is disclosed a system and assemblage for producing microtexturized surfaces on implants for use in vertebrate animals, including humans and on substrates for use in growing and developing tissues and/or cells in vitro. By using the disclosed system and assemblage, the geometric configuration and the dimensions of the microtexturized surfaces can be pre-determined to impart a customized design texture on the implant or substrate surface thereby optimizing implant acceptance by and durability in the host tissue and the in vitro promotion of the growth and development of various types of cell tissue on substrates.

A binocular mountable on a headgear, includes two optical systems, one for each eye of the user. Each system includes at least an objective lens and an eyelens. The binocular is pivotably attached to the headgear. When the headgear is in position on the user's head, the objective lenses and the eye lenses can be quickly swiveled out of the way to facilitate free and unaided vision, and returned to the position of binocular-aided vision. The binocular optical systems can be configured to provide either telescopic or microscopic effects. Moreover, the mounts of the lenses are transparent and integrally formed with the respective lenses. Thus, a continuity of visual field without 'tunnel' vision is achieved. Hook and loop type fasteners can be used to attach the optical systems to the headgear, which can be either a cap or a visor. Additionally, a laser light/sun light shield can be provided. The optical systems can define bifocal optical systems. A single optical system (i.e., for one eye of the user) can also be mounted to a headgear.

Covert optical system for probing and inhibiting remote targets

An X-ray imaging apparatus includes a transducer for converting incident X-radiation to a corresponding pattern of electrical charges. The charges generated by the transducer are accelerated onto an array of charge-detecting or charge-storing devices which store the charges in the form of an electrical signal corresponding to the charge pattern. The electrical signal may be transferred out of the array of charge-storing devices to an external signal-processing apparatus, such as one employing digital processing techniques, at which the signal may be stored or displayed as an X-ray image.
