The present invention provides a coating composition, a process for producing the same, one or more coating layers derived therefrom, and articles comprising one or more such coating layers. The coating composition according to the present invention comprises: (a) from 10 to 90 percent by weight of an aqueous, high-solid, solvent-free alkyd dispersion comprising: (i) from 40 to 70 percent by weight of one or more alkyds based on the total weight of the dispersion, wherein each said one or more alkyds has an acid value of less than 20 and a molecular weight (Mn) in the range of greater than 1000 Dalton; (ii) from less than 10 percent by weight of one or more surfactants, based on the total weight of the dispersion; and (iii) from 30 to 55 percent by weight of water, based on the total weight of the dispersion; wherein said aqueous, high-solid, solvent-free alkyd dispersion has an average particle size diameter in the range of from 0.05 to 5 &#x3bc;m; (b) from 10 to 90 one or more second dispersions, one or more second emulsions, or combinations thereof; wherein said coating composition has a solid content of in the range of from 25 to 65 percent by weight of solid content, based on the total weight of the coating composition, and the coating composition has a pH in the range of from 7 to 11, and wherein the coating composition has a volume average particle size in the range of from 0.03 to 5 &#x3bc;m, and wherein the coating composition has a viscosity in the range of from 100 to 10,000 cP.

Coating composition, and a process for producing the same

The present invention provides a coating composition, a process for producing the same, one or more coating layers derived therefrom, and articles comprising one or more such coating layers. The coating composition according to the present invention comprises: (a) from 10 to 90 percent by weight of an aqueous, high-solid, solvent-free alkyd dispersion comprising: (i) from 40 to 70 percent by weight of one or more alkyds based on the total weight of the dispersion, wherein each said one or more alkyds has an acid value of less than 20 and a molecular weight (M) in the range of greater than 1000 Dalton; (ii) from less than 10 percent by weight of one or more surfactants, based on the total weight of the dispersion; and (iii) from 30 to 55 percent by weight of water, based on the total weight of the dispersion; wherein said aqueous, high-solid, solvent-free alkyd dispersion has an average particle size diameter in the range of from 0.05 to 5 &#x3bc;m; (b) from 10 to 90 one or more second dispersions, one or more second emulsions, or combinations thereof; wherein said coating composition has a solid content of in the range of from 25 to 65 percent by weight of solid content, based on the total weight of the coating composition, and the coating composition has a pH in the range of from 7 to 11, and wherein the coating composition has a volume average particle size in the range of from 0.03 to 5 &#x3bc;m, and wherein the coating composition has a viscosity in the range of from 100 to 10,000 cP.

The adhesive of the present invention includes latexes with an adhesion promoter which is preferably polyamidoamine. The addition of the polyamidoamine improves the adhesive strength between substrates such as between two plastic films or between a plastic film and paperboard. The present invention also provides for an adhesive prepared from a latex which is neutralized with a particular base and a hydrophobic polyamidoamine having particular amine values and viscosity whereby the strength of the adhesive bond is increased in humid conditions. The present invention also provides for adhesives primarily for use in laminate structures which are exposed to highly humid conditions. The adhesive is a polymeric latex based system to which a polymeric adhesion promoter like polyamidoamine and an epoxy emulsion are added. The adhesive retains bond strength when exposed to humidity. The scope of the invention also includes laminate structures prepared with the present adhesive and other substrate layered structures which utilize the adhesive.

Polymeric adhesion promoter and latexes; and polymeric adhesion

A process for adhering a latex film to a polymeric substrate through the formation of covalent bonds at the interface of the polymeric substrate and the latex film. The covalent bonds are formed through the reaction of a cyclic imino ether group, 2-alkenyl-2-oxazoline, and a coreactive group, active hydrogen, epoxy or anhydride group, one of which is present in the polymeric substrate and the other of which is present in the latex. A product prepared from the improved method of adhering a latex film to a polymeric substrate is also included.
